Kalevala book

Post by Kupcake » Sun Sep 13, 2009 5:35 am

Hi everybody! When we moved from Finland some dear friends of ours gave us a book detailing some major art pieces associated with Kalevala. It is a large coffee table type picture book, very lovely. They gave it to us in the midst of the end of our packing. However, i gave it to one of the packers to put in a box and now it has disappeared. I really want to have it and am happy to order it over the net if possible, but i didn't have a chance to have a good look at the name of it. Is anybody aware of this book who could give me the name of it and where i can order it from?

Thanks

Could it have been Kalevala kuvissa? There’s also an English edition called The Kalevala in Images. (I can’t seem to find any information about the actual format of this book, though.)

There was a big Kalevala exhibition in Ateneum last year and I guess the book was published at the same time.

You can order it from Ateneum's webshop:

Just heard about this mp3 if anybody's interested:
The Kalevala: Finland's National Epic

Storyteller and musician Nick Hennessey travels to Finland to explore the mythical world of the country's national poem, The Kalevala.

First published in 1835, this 50-chapter epic inspired a 19th-century artistic awakening and remains a cornerstone of contemporary Finnish culture. Speaking to musicians and critics, Hennessey finds out how the poem helped shape the nation.

Broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Sunday, 27th December 2009.
You'll need BBC iplayer or access to TheBox or similar.
