Seeking Work in Finland *ENG*

Post by eko » Tue Jan 19, 2010 11:49 am

Greetings,

I'm a 19 year old Australian moving to Finland seeking part-time or full-time work in early May 2010.
I am flexible with areas as I have an option to either live in Joensuu or Helsinki.
Basically I've worked a lot of odd jobs in a lot of different fields, whether it be switchboard manufacturing, stacking shelves, deli assistant, customer service and cafe work.
I've got a couple of certificates from TAFE in IT under my belt and plan on continuing them to complete my Networking degree in Finland.

I'd like to get an idea on my options or any other information before I move.

Thank you in advanced.

As non-EU you will have to find permanent employment in order to get a visa (unless you have a GB passport in your back pocket which you're keeping quiet about  ).

As far as I understand the situation, you either come here on a student visa (which limits how much you can work) or you come with a job contract signed and sealed.

Even if you come in on a tourist visa and you (magically) find a permanent job, I don't think you are allowed to stay here while the RP is being processed. Not too sure about that.

Maybe some of the others can be a bit more precise...

If you want to know about the availability of jobs in the IT sector then you need to be a bit more specific about your qualifications and experience. IT is one of the only sectors that hires non-Finnish speakers, but even they (eg Nokia) usually work through e-brokers or agencies (who use temporary contractors). It's pretty hard for anyone to find work at the moment, but if you are non-EU it's even harder.

(Waooaoaoa! 7000 posts  I should get out more :ohno: )

Ah, penny you forgot the "sexchange holiday" agreement visas for 3 month stints per job.

Yeah, well you can explain those. Nobody had answered his post so I just thought I'd give it my best shot. I really have no clue how to get a visa since (a) I am not Australian and (b) I am married to a Finn so I got in with the "do not pass go, do not collect £200 card".

But commuting to Joensuu every three months from down there, doesn't seem a very eko-friendly thing to do.

I have a UK passport and my girlfriend is finnish. I have dual AU/UK, so I'm guessing that the UK passport is part of the EEA or something?

More-so looking for just a factory type of job as I've been working in several different places. Whether it be sheet-metal, powder coating, assembly etc.

IT was just to get a low-down of the infrastructure so I can understand the concept of how the finnish business world manages its employees.

hey, who's side are you on anyway

We have to work together against the evil enemy... those that persecute us for being the superior race (something to do with having the best jeans I think) and having more sensible roundabout rules.

Ppffffttt... How can you say sensible, when you cannot tell if you are turning or switching lanes.

I am just glad that Finland does not beat us regularly at football, rugby or cricket... then I would have no response at all. Luckily I just have to put up with comments on Eddy the Eagle...

OK, bring it on all you Australians, French, Italians, Germans, South Africans, Brazilians, Indians and everyone else that beats us continuously at our beautiful games. :D

Moi

I have a similar question. It has been mentioned about moving to Finland and obviously I would need work there.
I've tried contacting a few places in Finland to ask about opportunties for people who are not fluent in Finnish but are learning the language but none of them have replied to me.

I am admin, secretarial.

Would anyone have any advice?
