learning swedish

Since i live in Kokkola, which is half swedish speaking, i figured out i should learn a bit of swedish. What isthe best book to learn swedish from almost the beginnig. I studied finnish with the Leila White's books. Is there something similar for swedish?

I found "Swedish: an elementary grammar-reader" by Gladys Hird to be helpful at first. Also "Nybörjarsvenska" from Kursverksamhetens förlag, which is highly pictorial but entirely in Swedish (so you need either a mentor or some background).

201 Swedish verbs is a good complement along with a Swedish-English dictionary.

The equivalent of Karlssons grammar appears to be Deskriptiv svensk grammatik by Britta Holm and Elizabeth Nylund but that's for a later stage as it's more advanced and at least my copy is entirely in Swedish.

If you did OK with Finnish you'll do fine with Swedish as long as you have some time and effort to put into it. For me, after learning the basic grammatical outline of the language (straightforward and not too large), the best thing was just reading and later listening. Unlike in Finnish, it is easy to look up every word you don't know. So if you can recognize tenses and you know how the definite articles look on the ends of nouns, you can work out an entire sentence with only a dictionary.

I have a book I no longer use so I can post it to you if you're willing to cover the postage cost. PM your home address if you're interested. Only trouble is I bought it ten years ago so it's with a cassette.

I sat through a Swedish course a few years ago and the book we used was

Svenska Utifrån by Roger Nyborg, Nils-Owe Pettersson and Britta Holm. It is intended for absolute beginners but it is all in Swedish so probably a book better suited to the classroom.

I also bought Swedish an Essential Grammar (Philip Holmes and Ian Hinchliffe) which explains Swedish grammar in English. No exercises in it though.

The course I did was rubbish as everything was translated into Finnish and Estonian (both time-consuming and tedious and probably unnecessary) and we spent hours in a language lab going through rote learning grammar exercises (reminded me of learning French in the 60s!!!) even though the group was small enough to get some genuine communication going.... but that's the way they tend to teach languages up here. Boring.

So, if you sign up for a course, try and find one that is aimed at foreigners (not Finns) so the language of instruction is Swedish.

I put all of the example sentences (1000) into Mnemosyne with some grammar tidbits in the answer field. Once I had everything up in the old noggin', I could read Aftonbladet with a little help from the dictionary. I'm still adding sentences as I go, but the fundamentals are there.

Can you get the Swedish TV over there? Teema and FST5 also have langauge courses coming up. But always in the hous have it as "background". I leaned French and Spanish that way, from the news and soap operas.

Hot damn!

I've had problems ordering European DVDs from big companies before. Sometimes even getting a compatible address form has been a problem, other times they just wouldn't ship to the US. I don't know if I ever tried Amazon.de because I only thought to look for this item on amazon.co.uk.

I am semi-amazed that amazon.de actually recognized my amazon.com account and took most of the information and even privileges from there. I didn't have to fill in an address form at all. And if the delivery address had been in Germany, delivery would have been free.

So far so good. Eu 14.00 for standard shipping, which I'd rather see lower but am not too shocked about. I tried Season 1 and we'll see how smoothly the rest of the process goes.

Now what about those recorded warnings on many European DVDs that export is forbidden along with copying, rentals, etc. In that context, does "export" mean selling quantities to other merchants for resale abroad or does it mean they can't sell in Germany and send to an end-consumer abroad. Are those restrictions observed in practice? I've assumed (perhaps falsely) that that was one reason some companies wouldn't sell to me.
