Travel expenses for students.

Post by aguinness » Sun Feb 07, 2010 2:44 pm

Can anybody tell if a full time UAS student is able to claim tax back on commuting expenses to and from school like an employee can for commuting to and from work? I commute Hämeenlinna-Tampere daily and it costs about €300 monthly, I can´t seem to find the info.

It's a good idea to go personally to VR ticket office and ask them for a refund or student discount. Use your student card as a proof.
They should give you some discount for that. But try to change your living location, because it's still gonna be expensive to commute there and back everyday. It's too crazy like that.

Thanks forest girl but I know about student discounts, I am talking about tax or vero here, and moving is not an option for me :D I commute Hml-Tre daily by train and it's no big deal.

What is the income that is taxed in the first place? General requirement for most deductions is that you have some expenses needed to generate taxable income (income in present time, not in unspecified future) I'm not very hopeful, but you could explain bit more.

Oh yeah, i suppose that would be relevant :) My taxed income comes from the unemployment fund of my union, 80 % of my income before I became unemployed, I pay 22% tax.

No, does not sound like there is any grounds for tax deduction.

A couple of more words: under certain conditions and the law is pretty new. Kela web page gives some basic information.

And a few more, in my case nothing to do with KELA, if you have been paying into your unemployment fund in your union for more than 10 years, become unemployed, receive unemployment fund money (päivaraha) for more than 90 days, find an approved educational course of your own will, apply and get accepted, the unemployment fund will under certain conditions pay you money (koulutuspäivaraha) to attend a degree course. It's a complicated process and will not apply for everyone.
