Google Street View launches in Finland

Google Street View has been launched in Finland. They seem to cover all the big cities and many of the smaller towns, too.



Eniro has a similar street view service, but at the moment, they only cover Helsinki, Turku, and Tampere. (In addition to the street-level images, though, they also provide aerial views taken from a helicopter... which is a plus, I guess.)

Interestingly, Google censors military installations, but in Eniro you can do a "flyover" of say Santahamina or Parola military bases.

Also interesting was the recent HS article on Google Maps, (apparently) showing that there's a bridge leading from Kaisaniemi to Suomenlinna... and how about the submarine in Kruununhaka

I was wondering when this would happen, last summer as I was on my way to work I saw a Google car driving around with a funny pillar on top of the roof ... now to check if it captured me!...

possibly... link an unimpressive blurry blow-up of me driving towards the google blokey?

It is exciting for an ex-pat like me to explore the old neighbourhoods I was wondering when Finland was available on street view.

In our neck of the woods... without the summer foliage, you just might see in through our living room window. The camera thingummy has passed almost disturbingly close - luckily I wasn't out hosing the lawn in an inappropriate manner

Finally!!.... ...I had read sometime ago that it would be coming to Finland in 2010.....and it looks to me like they haven't been fooling around....the coverage is excellent and very extensive.....

And there will be lots of interesting "discoveries" for those who like looking at these things.... Within a few seconds I had already found an interesting sight on the streets of Helsinki...well, for me anyway .... ....an old Citroen CV4 which looks to be in remarkably good shape, waiting for the Google car to pass so it could make a turn.....and you get to see several pics from different angles.....

And there will be other sights even more interesting than that.....old buildings, landscapes, etc., etc.,..... I saw an enormous Ikea along the Torniojoki....made me think I had never left Vancouver... Now I'm looking for a full length train somewhere.... Shortly after I started looking at this stuff in North America, I found a long Union Pacific "grain train" with a variety of Canadian grain cars making its way along the Columbia River to Portland, I guess....as the train was moving in the same direction as the Google car there are many images.....

OK....So now, the rest of you, start looking for the things that interest you.... ....somewhere there is sure to be a hirvi or a karhu crossing a road....or maybe a herd of porot...

Oops. Quite a lot of unpixellated number-plates and faces in Lönnrotinkatu, at the junction with Mannerheimintie. Looks like they forgot that bit.
