Bowling alley in Sello

Post by irvman » Wed Feb 17, 2010 5:47 pm

So I figured why not, I'm not getting calls back on my job applications,I call and I'm told to go online and apply because they don't take calls. Same old story. I decide well why not just try something else just to have something to do so I walked to Sello's bowling alley and was told to email and so this is what response I got two days later.

Hello,

On behalf of Mr. ----------- I'm sorry to inform you that currently we can
only take employees who speak fluent Finnish. I wish you luck finding a
place to do your internship.

Best Regards,

--

The guy never met me or called me, my CV was in Finnish but it is obvious that I'm a foreigner. My question is what defines fluent Finnish from a foreigner? Varamies palvelu in Tapiola said also don't bother leaving in your application. Don't like to generalize Finns as racists or xenophobics but what is their stand on foreigners in workplaces?

No jos sä puhut suomea, niin sut voi palkata asiakaspalveluun. Jos et puhu, niin mitä vittua sä kuvittelet, onks sun pyllys kultaa vai?

Do you think that Mr.---- put someone else to write dismissal mail because: a) he didn't have time to do that b) he isn't comfortable communicating in English?

Unless you are a Finn then you will completely comprehend why they do the things they do. Anyways if you guys take it personally I know a very good blog where you may let whats inside your chest out and outsmart others. http://nemoo.wordpress.com/2007/06/07/a ... n-finland/ . Not because one is in Finland means one has to become a Finn. Its simple they don't hire I will gladly spend their taxes and when I'm bored of it I will leave.

Not beacuse one is in Finland means one has to be hired. Nokia hires engineers from India. Why don't they hire you? Must be racism, nothing to do with your skills, or rather the lack of them. How about you take a mirror and look who is responsible for you not getting a job?

If you have proved that you can speak and understand Finnish fluently then I really don't understand how they could have said that to you.

It can only be that this particular person does not want foreigners, but it could be good for business because tourists also like bowling, they wouldn't be quite so intimidated about the lack of their finnish skills.

Yes well if the answer was in English then I'd assume the application was in English. Nobodys interested in what language the CV is in, if you want a customer service job, they're interested what language is in you. They hire people who can do the job, they're not charities hiring someone because they show up at the door. To be able to work without the language, one needs to find a job where some other skill is the hiring factor. And as for needing language skills - whose fault is it the person does not speak Finnish? The employers?

Ah yes but if you can do the job AND you can speak fluent Finnish what is the problem?

Unless I am reading the OP wrong, I get the impression that they can speak fluent Finnish but obviously have an accent which shows they are not Finnish.

What skills do you need for a bowling alley?

Well if the varamiespalvelu tells them not to bother I think that implies something. Theres loads of bars and fast food joints the staff speaks a bit broken so it isn't like you fail for not rolling your r's - then again usually its the owner and his cousins running them.

Imagine that, if the entire country only functioned with engineers and IT professionals it would be very clear that if you studied something else Finland is not for you. I could be punishing myself for my lack of skills professionally, linguistically, and socially but then that means I been living too long here and I have also picked up the social hazards. There lies a big difference between foreigners and Finns. Finns would have just ended up depressed thinking they are not good enough ending up drinking and later committing suicide (Actually quite worrying that younger people are committing more suicide). In the other hand being a foreigner as challenging as it may be to be here ends up being rewarding when you see the results of years of hard work in integrating with the society. I can definitely look at mirror and see how proud I have made it and traveled against all odds. Don't forget as a foreigner you will end up working harder than a Finn in order to get the job. Unless you are really gifted in your field then Finns will even hire a translator to assist you.
