Apples in Finland

Post by punani » Tue Feb 23, 2010 1:45 pm

Hello everyone!

Can anyone tell me what's the average price of imported apples in Finland?
Also, is there any fair where producers can present their agricultural products?

Thanks a lot!

Apples are imported from France, Holland, Poland, Italy even China and in the autumn there are Finnish apples too.

The prices vary from about 1e a kg (the cheapest in season, probably Polish) to nearly 3e for the best.

I think you need to approach the importers of the big retailers like http://www.inex.fi/english/company/supplier/index.php am not aware of any food fairs for wholesalers (but there might be).

Closest to fair are market days. Just about every town worth calling it one has market where on certain dates of month there is... Market day.
Nearby producers will be there selling their goods. Some may send their little booth even further away when market days are suitably staggered, but costs of sending things far away very rapidly eat away any profits so it is very regional activity.

Size depends of course on size of market square (doh), size of town and so forth.
There is no large fair gathering large amount of producers from either all over country anywhere. Nation is too large in size and population is just too small to make such profitable.

I think the OP is asking about Trade Fairs. These are meetings arranged in a "messukeskus" where wholesalers and producers meet to show their stuff and negotiate contracts. I think he is looking for contacts to buy his produce. I guess Inex is probably the biggest wholesale importer in Finland; I know they have a warehouse near Kilo in Espoo which is just full of bananas and nothing else!

I know that Penny comes from the WEST of England where the main use of apples is Cider...but I suspect she would pay over the top for a Coxes Orange Pippin..Has anyone ever seen one in Finland?
I saw a display in City Market for Granny Smiths..but they were labeled as "from Italy"..how can that be?
Perhaps no "UK labels"

My parents live in Somerset but I am from Reading. The Somerset orchards are rapidly disappearing which is a crying shame.

I have never seen Cox's in Finland I doubt that enough are produced for export, I never saw any in France either. Granny Smiths are everywhere (French, Italian) but I have never seen Bramleys which are IMO the absolute bestist cooking apples.

We like the new "Pink Lady" apple. They are delicious, but expensive. I first tasted them in the UK at my parents' place but when I found out they were imported from NZ I went bananas (...my folks complaining about the orchards closing down and they buy apples from NZ  ). But since then I have seen them in Citymarket, imported from Italy. They usually come in quite late so I guess they store well during the winter and are exported after the main crop apples have run out and before the new season crops come in. Worth the extra money if you like sweet, crisp, juicy apples.

Question is, where our OP has his/her orchards? If in Finland, he/she should think of markets I mentioned.
If abroad, then I wonder why OP should be asking who are importing fruits to Finland.
