How to get published papers?

Post by DMC » Mon Mar 22, 2010 12:12 pm

Is the normal Finnish public library able to supply (papers published in) scientific / medical journals? Or can I get these from a university library? If I were a student I would get the papers from a university library but I am not on any course; I just want the papers for my own information.

I order articles from Terkko (http://www.helsinki.fi/library/terkko/) for work, but I have heard that you could order also as a private person (might cost more than for academic users).
Or if you are only looking for one particular article, it might be possible to ask someone with eg. HY access to retrieve it for you (you could PM me if you wish).

I've always had access to either a University Library or a corporate library, so have never tried what I would suggest ...
My guess is that if it would only be one or two articles, you local library might be willing to order it for you, but you should give them as much info as possible, as they may not be used to ordering journal articles.

Find the journal's index on-line, usually you can access at least the abstract for free... print out the details, author, title, journal name, year, volume, issue, start and end page, and the abstract. Take it to the library and let them run with it. The might give you a straight "no" but if you're lucky it might even brighten up their day to have an unusual request.

Our librarian often has to find obscure journals/books for me from TTY or TKK (or whatever they are called nowadays), and if they don't have them, it's requested from Germany. I have one such book on my desk at the moment which was inter-library loaned from TIB Hannover.

For companies there's usually a flat fee (€30 or so per article?) but as a private individual you might get away with not paying.
