old photos from Helsinki ca 1910 to 1940

Post by interleukin » Mon Mar 29, 2010 1:03 pm

Hi all,

SO is doing a work project where he needs to find old photographs from Helsinki from approximately the period 1910 to 1940. He has looked at the web for creative common photos, and I suggested libraries and old government archives, etc. Do you have any more suggestions for sources of photographs? What he would need is digital versions or to get scans of actual photos. Is there some "photography museum" or "city photography archives" or similar he could try?

thanks in advance,
interleukin

"Albumit auki -arkistolla on kuviin ainoastaan näyttöoikeus internetissä. Kaikkien kuvien tekijänoikeudet ovat niiden omistajilla, joten kuvien käyttö ilman lupaa on kielletty."

Of course taking a photo from the internet without permission for a job is not ok. :) If there is something nice there, his client will pay for the usage.

Wrong,

1) The physical owner of the photograph is not always the owner of the copyright and
2) Photographs not "work of art" and taken before year 1966 are free of copyright.

1) As original finnish text already said.
2) Published before 1966 not taken before.

"Omistaja" is not the same as "[kuvan] ottaja".

Well, "julkistettu" means more than just publish as a print. If the photographer would publish an advertisement where he/she would invite people to look the photo at his home the it's "julkistettu".

"Kaikkien kuvien tekijänoikeudet ovat niiden omistajilla, joten kuvien käyttö ilman lupaa on kielletty." = "All photos' rights belong to their respective owners, so using the photos without permission is prohibited."

As original already said, there is no reference to someone who took the photo(s), only the owner of the rights.

edit. kuvan omistaja != kuvan ottaja, but by default, if nothing else is (work for hire etc.) comes up, then the one who took the photo has the rights...
