Check credit history

Hello everybody,
I was just curious about how stores/companies check your credit history ? For example: if you go to X store to buy a PC, and ask for a credit, they will ask you some info like your name, social security number, address, salary..etc and if you don't have any bad history payments they will accept your request, they give you the PC and after you pay x%/month plus interest and another taxes etc etc. My question is: does anyone know how they check your background with your security social number ? You should be a company to get access to the database where the "black list" is or how exactly this is done ? Through the bank ? Can someone explain to me ? Thank you in advance.
