Is there financial "assistance" when keeping child home?

Post by vegemite » Wed Apr 14, 2010 11:12 am

Would someone know if besides the kotihoidontuki and the kuntalisä is there some assistance if the parents choose having a person from the family or a friend to take care of a baby (instead of daycare)?

How much it is or how is it calculated?

Would it need to be a minimum hours/week?

As I work part time, I do not want to put our baby in daycare(yet).

Wouuld this assistance cover, for instance a nanny or aupair?

Thank you!

Sun is coming back to Finland!!

Nope, just those. But you also get tax deductions for work done in your home (60%), which can include childcare.

You can get a supplement to the child home care allowance, depending on the income of the family. There is also a private day care allowance for under school aged children in private care, but you cannot get it if you get child home care allowance. Check "families" > "child care benefits" on http://www.kela.fi.

Notice, that kuntalisä depends on where you live. Not all municipalities pays it.

Edit: Hmm... now that I actually read the links, there is a part-time child care leave where a parent/parents can get a small allowance for reducing their work hours, that seems to be new (well, at least for me) for children under 3. It is the same leave/allowance that is for parents with children in the 1st or 2nd grade. There are some restrictions on who can get this allowance, so check with Kela.
