Want to Open Tattoo Salon!

Post by viktoriia » Sun May 02, 2010 3:14 pm

Hi,

I want to open tattoo salon and make only temporary tattoos based on old Eastern technic. What do you think about this? Can this project be successful?

Thanks!

Such an in-depth question calls for an extensive answer!
No.

I think you should do some basic budgeting: Rent, insurances, wages, materials, taxes, price of your services and customers needed. There are 24 hours a day and you probably can't handle more than one customer at time.

I guess it will take the same time to apply as a real tattoo. And other things will be more or less the same too (housing, electricity, heating, taxes, ...)
It means that the price of a temporary tattoo will be more or less the same as a real tattoo. I wonder if there is a big enough market for that.

A hundred euros or so an hour for a temporary tatt? Hmmm....I doubt people will pay that.

They are two totally different things...different equipment, different amount of skill needed etc etc...So the price is a lot different.

So the price is a lot different.
The price is not only based on the quality of the product.
It should cover the costs (rent etc.) and give enough profit for at least a minimum income. Since you cannot expect to have clients 100% of the time, you might end up with stiff prices. That's why I do wonder if this business idea will work.

But there is a chance... many people are worried about the permanence of tattoos and lets say for 100€ you can get a tattoo for approx. 6 months (I guess that the henna tattoos last that long)... also parents might be happier for their teenagers getting temporary tattoos. I have refused my daughters requests, but might have been convinced on a temporary one.

I do not know if it would work, but with some market research then it might be possible. I would set up as freelance in an existing tattoo shop (if they would allow that) for the first 6 months or so to see if it could work before committing to spending many thousands on rental/ chairs/ tables/ till etc etc.

OK, I have real tattoos so I will not be your customer... unless my daughter keeps pestering me!

Quick Google-Fu tells me through Wikilies that henna tattoo lasts from days to little over a month.
Other sources claiming two weeks to several months...
Depending on how you care for it (and how efficiently you prevent shedding skin I guess).

Oh yeah, and for best result client has to agree to have the tattooed area wrapped up in plastic foil or something else to increase heat in the area. Duration should be overnight.

That price just got much steeper for clients.

Also henna tattoos have bad rep due to issues with PPD which might be used in fast dying black henna.
