1. Very difficult to live with that money for 2 people... and if that €1200 is BEFORE tax, then even you might be finding it difficult to live with that €...
2. Very difficult to say as no one here knows what your wife can do...
3. Only when you come here can you really talk about a strategy to find a professor that can fund you and that is A very difficult thing to find!!

How about the summer jobs ? Did the summer jobs also difficult ?
Yes, you have to compete with students who know the local situation, have contacts and speak the lingo. And many student cannot even find a summer job.

Berry picking is probably the best chance, but it is back breaking work for little pay.

I guess one could live with that , (if that is tax free and) if the accommodation is cheap enough. I was about to write that Migri(*) does require you to have at least 1530/month (after tax) though before they would give your wife a permit, but on second look it seems they would require from a student and his one adult family member only 1130/month total. You could perhaps send them an email to check if that is officially sufficient. Then to make i sufficient in practice, you'd need to find a flat that is not too expensive (does not take more than half of your money)

Is your funding a salary or a scholarship? Salaries are taxable but scholarships not.

Yes then the question is what kind of a permit the wife will have - if it allows working at all...

For a fellowship funding you don't need to pay taxes.

If you find accommodation with a reasonable rent (eg HOAS), you will get by with e1200.
