Difference between kindergarten and group family day care

Post by sanam_bl » Thu May 20, 2010 10:37 am

Hi,

I need to put my kid in the daycare, he is a year old.
In one of the day care they asked me if I want to put him in kindergarten or group family day care.
Can you please tell me what is the difference between the two?
Will the teaching be different or will the fees be different?
Which one is better?
If any of you have any information regarding this please kindly share because I have no idea what they mean.
Based on your suggestions it will be helpful to make decision :)

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Sanam

group family means you have 1 adult for 4 kids, you can have up to 3 adults for 12 kids in the same place. I would say it is a bit like a nany keeping the kids in her owm house. te best solution is the one thaty fits your kid.
We had a family group thing and in our case it was a disaster. Now a friend of mine had it too and she was very happy with it, so it depends on the person dealing with your kid.
There isn't reallly any teaching at this age, it is play/games, so no, no differences there, and the fee is the same unless you go private.
We are very happy with our daycare now, but we were not with the first one we had, so it is also a matter of luck. You might not be able to choose the one yuo want, I mean you fill in a request and then they will tell you which one you get.

Good luck!

A kindergarten is bigger with 20 up to x children with appr. 1 nurse / teacher per 5 to 8 children.

It is a very personal choice. But there are 3 options:
- family day care: one nurse at her home with 4 to 5 children
- group family day care: often in a small appartment or house with 6 to 10 children and 2 to 3 nurses
- kindergarten: bigger with 20 up to x children

We choice for group family daycare because I was afraid of leaving him with only 1 person. Now he has about 4 nurses who take care of him and he can always go to the same place even if one of the nurses is sick. And he relates well to 3 out of 4 nurses. Also I like it that there are more then 4 kids but still not too many, he knows all the children and likes them very much. He was only 9 months when he started daycare and it turned out really well. Now he will stay home with me and will go back to daycare only when he is 2,5 together with his little sister. By then we'll have a new kindergarten in our neighbourhood but with small groups (12 for kids under 3 and 24 for children older than 3) and I will send them there if there is place, because I think a smaller group is better for younger kids and older kids can handle a bigger group.

BUT this is totally my opinion!

Hi Gigi,

Thanks a lot for the detail explanation.
Now I am quite clear with the difference between the 3.

One point to consider is that in a kindergarden there will be a kindergarden teacher in each group rather than only nurses. There is a difference in the length and depth of education between these proffesions so it might influence your decision. Additionally when your children attend pre-school it is possible that this is provided at the same knidergarden avoiding the need for upheaval and disruption. This is not the case in the other options.

If your children attend pre-school, it's not mandatory, you know?
