Bit late to chime in - I was raised on Laura Scudders chunky 'peanuts and salt and nothing else'. I get a very closer result at home- I roast 'em* and then put them in the food processor (blendor works too, make sure it has enough power). Not too messy. Food processor bowl and blade wash up in the dishwasher - if you have one.

*I'm lazy, buy pre-shelled and don't even skin all of them. Comes out darker, with a tad bitter but richer taste.

Yes - that works - but you really have to find GOOD peanuts - TREMENDOUS variance in quality (taste) - when you eat them fully salted on their own - it's not so terribly noticeable - but wash the salt off - dry - add a bit of salt - eg lo-Na - and use as peanut butter - if the peanuts not really excellent - VERY noticeable - belches, after-taste and all.

I have found the Euro-shopper 1 kg bag rather decent. (but do remember to wash the salt off - roast a bit to dry - then grind).

try Lidl, that germanese store chain has pretty much cheaper prices and wide food product list. their stores are quite common, you can find them in almost every city.
