an excerpt in a faq on citizenship on www.migri.fi

4. Is the child born of foreign parents in Finland granted Finnish citizenship?

If the child is not granted the citizenship of another state, and does not have the secondary right to acquire the citizenship of another state on the basis of its birth, for example, through the confirmation of paternity or through declaration procedure, the child is granted Finnish citizenship.

The child is also granted Finnish citizenship on the basis of place of birth, if the parents have refugee status or they are receiving protection against the authorities of the state of which they are citizens, and if the child would not be able to acquire the citizenship of either of its parents without the assistance of the authorities of that state.

No, I think nowadays US is the only country with that practise.

Usually the child follows mother´s citizenship.

Finns follow the biblical jewish system of maternal lineage - the child is a Finn if its born to a Finnish mother regardless of where...

I do not agree with you about the Jewish law,Finns historically are not in any way connected to the Jews.Why is it then, that the baby of a foreigner mother married to a finnish man is issued Finnish citizenship,if truly we will follow your maternal lineage theory?Foreigners babies in Finland are not issued Finnish citizenship if the parents themselves do not have Finnish citinship simply because the system is structurally anti Immigrant and do not want to encourage foreigners to live in Finland.Ofcourse all foreigners are aware of this and those who will choose to stay will stay.

Hank's theory applies to Finnish mothers. The mother in your example is not Finnish , so the theory does not apply.

Encouraging foreigners to live in Finland could be seen as being unethical.... imagine the kind of life that the poor ba5tards will have here.

The child gets the mother's citizenship as a birthright, the father is a fringe benefit.

Yes indeed, we encourage people to get the citizenship and not stay "foreigners".

Finn + Finn => Finn
foreign + foreign => foreign
Finn + foreign => Finn or Finn + foreign.
So you need to have Finnish blood to be born a Finn.

Thank you,i learn something new from you,my advise for immigrants is to migrate to countries that operate a different birth policy and grant right of citizenship to a child at birth as the childs right.
