Good Chinese/Cantonese Food in Turku

Post by Canuck77 » Tue Jun 29, 2010 12:04 am

Emphasis on good.

I have had horrific experiences at two 'restaurants' in Turku.
New China Town around kauppatori, and another restaurant
that is near puutori - I forget its name because I probably
meant to forget it.

Where I come from, we have a China Town. Authentic Chinese food.
Mandarin, Cantonese, you name it. However, I cannot find the same
quality of food here in Turku. It doesn't even come close in comparison.

Anyone can recommend a good place to go have some good Chinese food?

Thanks.

Is that the one that was digging out food from the bins and reserving it the next day?

My mate wondered why his vegetables were different even though he ordered the same food everytime he went in there...

As for recommendations...Nope...try Helsinki

With the exception of the one in Kamppi, http://eat.fi/helsinki/empire-plaza which was pretty good about 6 months ago, and one that used to be in Kaisaniemi about 10 years ago, the Oriental restaurants I´ve tried here have been utter dogs**t.

Finland isn´t the best place to start looking for oriental food, I suggest you try London.

 Have never found a great Chinese restaurant in this country. There just isn't the availability of good quality fresh veg and seafood that's necessary to create the quality of dishes found in most Chinese restaurants in TO, Vancouver, SF, NY, etc.
That´s not true. Excellent, fresh ingredients are available year round in Finland, but the locals are not generally willing to pay the prices required for good quality.
Cory wrote:The restauranteurs in Finland are not cooking for Chinese customers...they're cooking for the locals and their tastes.
That´s one reason.

The main reason IMO, is that most chinese restaurants here are run as a side line or second job e.g. to studying, but by people who can´t actually cook. Doesn´t seem to matter though, so long as they look asian, can heat up frozen ingredients in a wok, and put it on a plate for under €5, the locals just lap it up.
Cory wrote:Next time you're "home", call up a friend, whose Mom/Dad still try to uphold a traditional Chinese kitchen (ie..parents' were from HK or mainland China) and ask "the cook" to show you how to prepare some dishes. Dead easy, really... just a mattter of knowing how to get the sauces right and how to dry out the noodles for a good crispy chow mein!
IIRC chow mein is from North America, not mainland China, it´s another examples of example of asian cooking adapted to local tastes, like California roll, chicken tikka masala... or the Finnish kebab pizza.

Well, that dish at New China Town near Kauppatori in Turku cost me 12 euros.
My husband and I ended up paying 22 euros in total, and it was utter crap.
We tried so hard to communicate with the person that the dish in fact was NOT
lemon chicken. He 1) did not speak Finnish, 2) did not speak English (some Asians
speak it), 3) I asked him to bring us the menu back and we both had different
menus, different dishes listed, it was just odd, 4) obviously, we did not finish
the dishes (both lemon chicken and fried rice), but we did try them with a
!"#¤% of soy sauce and chili to bring out some flavour to it. It was utter crap.
I honestly would have preferred to burn that €20 than pay for a dish out of that place.

Brand new place. Was not too bad. We ordered one Thai curry and one Chinese beef dish. Used fresh veg and homemade sauces.

I KNEW it was John Malkovich!! I told my husband and he said 'No, that's not him.. pfft!'

:(

I will check it out. I love Thai.

He said he'd been to the medieval market on Sunday about noonish. I heard today from a colleague that John and a few of his cast mates had been to the Old Bank after the last show last night.
You're kidding me! I went to the Medieval Market by Tuomiokirkko on Friday, had plans to go back on the weekend but my friend never got back to me and I made other plans. Grr :(

Today I went to Kiinan Muuri, aka Great Wall of China.
I would have to say I finally found my Chinese restaurant in Turku.
The food was great, the service very friendly and very good.
Price was great as well. I was very pleased with it overall, and
not to mention that the lemon chicken was made the way it is
supposed to be made. I really really recommend Kiinan Muuri
if you want to enjoy good Chinese food. YAY!

Whereabout is this restaurant? I have the impression that there's at least 2 Chinese restaurants of that name in Turku -- one of them I'm not too impressed with (Kiinanmyllynkatu/Vähä Hämeenkatu), so I was wondering which one you went to.

I once tried the Dragon palace on Brahekatu and quite liked it.
