Not the better way – the only way. :D
I think I preferred the one with the illative. The thought of teaching the language "into" us primitives rather than "onto" us sounds like it would involve something kinky.

What about vocab flashcards that are made for Finnish children? where could I buy them? I looked at the Suomalainen Kirjakauppa and Stockmann Academic Bookstore but couldn't see them. Are they there and I've just been looking in the wrong place? (I did ask but they just said no they didn't have any but I've learned that even though they say they don't have something it sometimes just means "I don't know what the hell you're talking about" ) I ended up buying a children's book with pictures and words which has been mildly helpful. I'd just really like to get my hands on a nice set of flashcards :)

Some keywords:
• • •

You might want to take a look at this catalog as well... they have many vocab-related board and card games – some of which are marked as suitable for adults, too. From a cursory look at their catalog I think the following products might interest you:
  • Alias – a board game where you explain words from randomly picked cards to the other players, trying to get them guess the word in the card, without being allowed to say the word aloud
  • Junior Alias – the same as above but the cards have pictures on them too
  • Alfapet – the Finnish (originally Swedish) version of Scrabble
  • Lasten Alfapet – a version of Alfapet for kids (not sure how it differs from the normal version)
  • Tieto, taito & temppu
  • Höpön löpön
  • Kuriiri-peli
  • Veijon verbipeli (this one seems interesting – the cards have verbs on them)
  • Veijon missä, mistä, mihin? (An additional pack of vocab cards for the above: nouns and locative cases)
  • Veijon sanakortit? (An additional pack of vocab cards for the above: nouns with pictures)
  • Otsapokka (Sort of like... a reverse Alias!)
Edit: They have another interesting catalog here...

There are plenty of Finnish 'flashcard' sets in this page http://quizlet.com/subject/finnish/ .

There are several ways of learning the words in the sets:

For instance Familiarize works as flashcards, basically showing you the words.

In the Learn option, you go through the set of words writing them. At the end of first round you can see which you got right and wrong. Then when you choose to continue to the second round, you will have to get the remaining words right. It continues like this, untill you get them all right. This is my favourite because you use the energy where it is most needed - on the difficult words.

There is also the Test option where you can make you own simple tests-, multiple choice, true false and just writing

Finally there are the Scatter and Space Race 'games', where the last mentioned at least is a quite fun way to get to be able to use the words without having to think about it first, because it is a time limited and a bit stressing challenge.

You can make you own sets and share them with others if you wish, and/or the ones other people have made. There are some nice and simple import and export options for adding many words or sentences in a fast and easy way.

You can also join groups made by other finnishlearners to get access to even more sets
For instance this one http://quizlet.com/group/49255/

Thank you! That is an interesting and apparently quite useful website.

I've had a chance today to spend more time on this site and it's not bad. There's no English but now that I have learned to navigate my way around a bit it's proving to be more interesting. Thanks :)

No, well only up to three  I definitely need to learn numbers quickly they seem to be so necessary for every day life. We only mastered the days of the week last week.

And people think we are mean when we nudge them a little here, not realizing that we kick our languages ass every day, all day... its even hard for us, so we try to conserve our energies and talk less.
You guys are funny! Yes, it is hard language, when time goes on. It was easier for me to start with, but now when I want to speak nicely or write (do not even ask), it became discrouging.

But keep trying! Thank you all people's efforts and time.

I have posted a whole bunch of Finnish sentences and images for those who use Mnemosyne and believe in the sentence method of learning.

The link is here

This is my first attempt, so thanks in advance for any comments and your patience !

Good luck
