I didn't, and they wouldn't accept anything else as proof of ID so I had to return a second day to get the license :(
Well, I'm pretty sure they would have accepted a Finnish issued ID card if you had had one...

Looks like i have to take a medical for an exchange. Anyone know where/how i can get one ?
Also do I just walk into any police station with the paperwork and ask for an exchange?

Thanks folks
The private doctors like Mehilainen, Diacor, Terveystalo etc. all do it. Call and ask specifically for the driving license medical. Should be 40-60EUR.

The medical is important because it gets you those special letters (D1, E1 etc) transferred from your existing license. My nurse got very confused and ran out of space - my advice - check what they write and make sure all your letters are there!

PS My medical involved the classic stand-sideways-by-the-wall-with-one-hand-cupping-your-ear-and-repeat-the-whispered-word... if you get stuck I can tell you the words are "dog" and "cat" :ochesey: I was also asked if I drink, and then if I drink and drive. I didn't think it was inappropriate to confess that I have had the odd glass of wine at home with dinner WTF

Look up your local Poliisi license unit (central Helsinki is on Punanotkonkatu and called Kaartin poliisitalo).

Here http://www.poliisi.fi/poliisi/helsinki/ ... endocument you can follow the cunningly Finnglish "welcome to time reservation" link and book a time so you don't have to queue

Don't forget your photos and passport...

I am so glad I found this thread - I will be changing my UK license when I get to Finland as it will be expiring this year. I rely on the ability to pull a trailer with a car on it (I do club racing), and would be rather pi$$ed off if I lost that ability when changing from UK to Finnish license!

I will make sure I get the medical done and take that with me!!!

Thank you very much :)

Dang, I need to switch my Finnish one to the UK one. Have to send my id/passport, licence, a photo and the forms along with a fifty quid check in the mail...

Oh,thank you a lot!!! :)
It sounds a bit complicated, but it's still much better option then if I would need to do it from start here.. :) just have to wait 3 months more, because I need "information showing that the applicant has been driving in Finland for a minimum of six months" :) and I am here only 3 months now..
