Post by DogDoo » Tue Apr 06, 2010 9:47 pm

Maybe it´s stupid question but ... Im supposed to write a motivation letter in Finnish ... Could anyone tell me, how to start this letter, if I dont know the name of the addressee? Is there any special structure? Any phrases?

'Hyvä <something>' or 'Arvon <something>' probably are suitable, the latter being more formal and courteous. The <something> being a common term (in singular) for the group of people (I believe) you're addressing, a colleague for example. Avoid using words like 'rakas' or 'ystävä', as that sounds like being a kiss-ass and a fake, unless they in fact are your loved ones or personal friends (in which case you'd know their names).

Opintotukilatakunnalle
Oppilasvalintalautakunnalle
Kirkolliskokoukselle

Hyvät kirkolliskokouksen osanottajat,
Arvoisa oppilasvalintalautakunta,

:?:
"By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes."
