Syönyt Omena....Something Wrong Here???

Post by Rob A. » Wed Aug 18, 2010 8:25 pm

I've been reviewing Finnish participles and have been left a bit confused by what I encountered here under Section 3 Formation"...dealing with active past participles:

1. äsken puhunut mies="the man who has just talked"....this seems correct to me....the man did the talking...

2. syönyt omena="the eaten apple" ....this seems incorrect, as though the apple did the eating..I would think only the passive past participle would make sense here...syöty omena....

3. tehnyt tehtävä="the done task" ....same thing here...as though the task did itself...surely it should be tehty tehtävä

4. nukkunut lapsi="the child that has slept"....this example seems correct to me...

5.saanut kirje="the received letter"....and again the letter seems to be receving itself...the correct version could only be...saatu kirje...

So...am I missing something??.... before I say anything critical about what I have otherwise found to be a very helpful site, I want to make sure that I know what I'm talking about...:D

Rob A, you're absolutely right. The examples you picked were -erm- garbage, and your corrections are spot on

There's another strange mistake a bit later on...
rohjennut varas / the thief that has become braver
'rohjennut' is not the same as 'rohkaistunut' (from rohkaistua), the latter would be the right Finnish form for that particular translation.

Rohjennut varas... would be "the thief that has dared (to do something)", but it sounds a bit weird, or incomplete. One would rather say "varas, joka rohkeni murtautua sisään". I'm not quite sure meself if "sisään rohjennut varas" (in the sense of sisään uskaltautunut varas) would be correct & grammatical... perhaps it is. Maybe not everyday usage though.

Thanks all....

I suppose it's always best to be a bit "flexible" when looking at some of these internet sources.... There are probably other mistakes too, though considering that it's "free" information, I think this one still does a pretty good job.... And anyway it's good practice trying to figure these things out...

At some point I'll send them an email.... And I guess there's always the risk that if they think maintaining the site is too much trouble for what they get out of it, they could just shut it down....:D

Oh...and I suppose Syönyt Omena....might be a good title for a horror movie... "The Apple That Had Eaten".... "Tarina kaksi sataa kilogramman omenasta joka nauttii syödä ihmisiä"....... :D

Mitäs "Tarina omenaa syövän madon syöneestä omenasta"

Kumpi syö kumpaa? :ochesey:

Brings to mind the old riddle...

-Mikä on pahempaa kuin mato omenassa?
-?
-puoli matoa omenassa...

As you can see, sometimes it's difficult even for natives to get these things exactly right...

Well Rob A. - even if its otherwise all logical, its sometimes just a "figure of speech" issue... like for example
Join paljon - olen juopunut.
Söin paljon - olen...

That is hard to translate, as we haven't had supersize meals at McD. We have "plus meals", so you might hear "Laitetaanko plussana?", but that don't really help with translation.

edit. Plus meal = meal with big fries and soda.
