Elative Case

Post by darkeale » Thu Aug 26, 2010 10:36 am

Hi,

I am looking for some help in understanding the use of the Elative case. I understand that it is like in English saying "from somewhere", or "out of somewhere". Can someone explain why the elative is used when saying "I like something", for example "I like music" = pidän musiikista.

Many thanks,
Alex

The Elative case has several abstract uses.

Esim;
Made from something/out of something.
The table is made of (from/out of) wood = Pöytä on tehty puusta.

Thinking about something.
What do you think about Liisa?
Mitä ajattelet Liisasta?
I like Liisa.
Minä pidän Liisasta.

If you have access to Fred Karlsson`s Finnish Grammar he gives most of the examples on page 102.
There should be a copy in your local library.

People do not become more irritable as they grow old - they simply stop making the effort to avoid annoying others.
