Can someone help me out translating?

Post by Lien » Wed Sep 01, 2010 2:55 am

I was wondering what "väärinymmärrystäni" means. I found it is used with apologies, but I tried to translate it and it didn't work. I did some searching around and nothing would translate it that I found.

If you could help me out that would be great. Thanks.

väärin = mis-
ymmärrys = understanding
= (partitive) roughly "of", "for" -- mostly an adapter to make it go with whatever verb it follows, probably pahoitella
ni = my

In sum, my misunderstanding.

If I were saying it, I would probably use väärinkäsitys rather than väärinymmärrys, but these things evolve over time and I may be outdated in that.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.
