military career options?
military career options?
Hi everybody. I'll be 26 in november and got my citizenship few weeks ago. I would like to know military career options if any available. I couldn't find much info online on finnish military websites.
Re: military career options?
Have you served your military? You have to do that before any career. And it is easy to find: http://www.puolustusvoimat.fi/portal/pu ... fi/english

Hello
No, I haven't yet. I didn't get any invitation letter either. I will call them tomorrow and try to join at January.

I can only say "geezus" at your eagerness.
Anyways, you need to excel, get AUK and RUK and then maybe perhaps you can start planning for career military. If you end up watching the soup cannon for 6 months then you're not - the next uniformed branch is the police (and they actually now have a drive trying to get immigrant background people).

Thanks for the comment. I'm also trying to convince a Finnish buddy of mine who wants to do civil service. Hopefully he will join the army with me. Can you tell me more about auk and ruk?
And the police. Are you talking about going to police academy?

Re: military career options?
You do realize that a career in the army means as an officer? I would assume you need therefore at least somewhat fluent Finnish.

Oh yeah I have level 4 Finnish but not perfectly fluent. Thanks for the link. I wonder if there is any ulkomaalainen in rauhanturvaajat.
Re: military career options?
Of course, there are lots of opportunities also as a civilian in the army. (See: Puolustusvoimat > Perustietoa > Työnhakijoille > Tehtävät puolustusvoimissa > Siviilihenkilöstö at the http://www.puolustusvoimat.fi site). There apparently is a "sopimussotilas" also, didn't know that, that you can sign up for for 6-12 months.
But start out by reading Varusmies 2010-kirjanen (hopefully the link works, if not it's found at "Puolustusvoimat > Perustietoa > Varusmiehille"). It should answer most of your questions.
Oh and... don't assume that you would do the military service at the same time & place as your friend. Although apparently they do try to place you at a station close to where you live, you would also need to go to the same type of military service, which may not be what you both want to do. Anyway, think in advance about what kind of military service you would like to do, or if you would like to join some of the special forces (again, check the Varusmies 2010 booklet for more information about this).

Thank you all for the great info. I contacted them with my friend today and they said there is a possibility to do military service at same place with my friend. Thanks for help.
I think it's the academy..5. enintään 26-vuotias.
Re: military career options?
It is the academy, but do you really think you can make career in Finnish army without degree?Geezus wrote:I think it's the academy..5. enintään 26-vuotias.
edit. they seem to have reintroduced the non-commissioned officers, so you can make career without degree from MPKK

Nah, they seem to have made the sotilasammattihenkilöt back to NCOs. No need to go to opisto as long as you have some skill that army needs.Pursuivant wrote:w00t, ratschool is back?
