Well, Monster is just one website, most of the people (in the field) that I know have gotten their jobs via trainee-ship first (while still in school) and later through their contacts. Clearly if the positions don't get filled, the supply and demand do not meet. Maybe it's about skimping on the salary, maybe something else.

This is true, it is very hard to find job in IT for newcomers. IT is one of most challenging area for entering, almost every company requires solid experience. But don't give up, keep trying and you will be rewarded eventually. It could take few years still.

Being on the other side of the fence, spent last two months interviewing people for few positions, including Software Engineers, Senior Software Engineers and Architects. Out of may be 40 people we have interviewed, none had exact level of experience we needed. For architects situation is even worse: when you get applications from freshmen a year or two after university who wants to pursue architects position, you don't need to ask tough questions, they fall apart themselves on relatively simple ones. Embedded Linux and multimedia, for those who are interested.

In our area the best references usually your own free software contributions and ability to read others' code. Believe or not, the latter skill is basically endangered, I see less and less skilled people who can read others' code and properly explain semantics of it.

The truth is that experienced achievers do already hold good positions and see no value to change. What unique benefit your company offers, why should I drop all what earned, take risk of trial period and do the move?

Another source of problems: companies are not flexible. Assume some good person worked ten years e.g. in Windows Terminal Services, knows all the details of RDP and eager to change. A target company needs Linux system programming skills, but they won't accept Windows candidate. Company looks for exact match CV against offer, which trims 90% of valuable candidates. Good thing, this is not prevailing practice but it happens in sometimes.

Hi,

The best IT job out there is Software development in ERP modules.. If you can read, write and think Microsoft dynamics(any module) then you have landed a fantastic job in Finland. Finnish is an advantage but not required. Though its good if youre learning on a daily basis.

I know a few companies urgently looking for Dynamics developers or consultants. (Finnish skills appreciated but not required). Drop me a line if you have atleast 2 or more years experience.

Cheers !
Dan

True. The general issue is that screening happens at HR level, especially with cases when there is automated CV processing.

And they don't believe a person can learn new things. How the f* exactly do they imagine the server guys get sudden experience in say solaris zones when they decide to upgrade. Eat a pill? Or put in the DVD and fiddle around? Lucky if they get to go on a course - of course the lab environment is totally different from what then is in the company, but they're instant experts dozing off in a room for a day.

Not, really. This practice is usually in small and lousy companies. Serious companies do require from candidates strong algorithmic skills. This is fundamental knowledge. Another criteria is the experience in software development as well as education. Of course, after moving into new position the person will have to learn new things. It is no matter if in previous company he was doing similar things -- new company and be ready to spend a half of year on learning cure.

To the kind folks who have replied saying they or their companies have recently been hiring:

I am an expatriate Finn who is returning to Finland in the near future. I have lived most of my life outside Finland, however still speak Finnish (although not very well on a technical level). English is my primary language.

I am a web application developer with over 12 years full time experience, including several years as a Senior Team Member/Developer with a prominent open source web application project. I have studied computing for over 20 years and founded my own freelance development company in 1998. Both Google and Mozilla use a logic system I developed and contributed to Open Source. Since 2007 I have used my own web application for developing client eCommerce sites. This code is now at version 2.0 and based on the Yii Framework.

Earlier this year I was approached by a USA company who made me a good enough offer to put my other freelance work on the backburner and to today I work for them full time (telecommute) as lead developer / software engineer.

My current work involves taking development ideas and graphics and transforming these to a working reality. I have extensive experience with listening to non technical and semi technical requirements and from these formulating workable solutions which often exceed expectations.

I specialize in eCommerce, PHP, MySQL, MVC, jQuery, Ajax, LAMP, SOAP, REST, AGILE, FFMPEG, SEO, Flash/Actionscript, Photoshop and have extensive experience in multimedia. My development framework of choice is Yii. I CAN both read other people's code and develop my own from scratch.

All this is good, but here is the crunch: I do NOT have any tertiary qualifications. No B.Sc./M.Sc., nada. I have however spent my entire development career on the bleeding edge of development (universities are always way behind) and have learned to think "outside the square". I program in my sleep (really!).

So, how are my chances in Finland?

You should hear nerds talking... if you are talking about something bleeding edge the chances are there is no Finnish word yet. Idle on some Finnish irc channels that are about coding and other nerdy things and see for yourself.

It only means that you should focus your search to private side as there you are more likely to be paid for what you do (compared to government and counties).
http://hae.monster.fi/Search.aspx?q=php ... 167&re=130 12 hits of which 4 are in English. And if you have some kind of Finnish skills and are a former native speaker...

I took some magic words to query, though it may be grunt jobs and of course the pay they offer is näkkileipä... as long as you can speak Finnish with the recruiter so they're convinced you can be put to brainpick the customer, most of the technobabble is in English (its an eternal fight whether we use translated forms or not)... So I'd say the only problem is that the recruiters will think you're too advanced for the job. Say some small gurufactory would bite - hash up a CV in monster and you'll get some headhunter calling you within a week. And as for BsC if you really want to torture yourself a paper, go to Haaga-Helia for the BIT (either in Finnish&English) and focus on the business side of things - you might end up teaching the eCommerce
