I posted this earlier but it didn't seem to come up so here it is again:
I'm looking into getting the hygienipassi to allow me to work in bars/restaurants beyond the rudimentary dishwashing jobs - I've been told by numerous people that this is the most likely option for an English speaker with limited knowledge of Finnish (although I am taking lessons and steadily improving), and having been round the bars, there seem to be quite a few English/Irish/Australian bartenders.
However, I don't have any direct experience - I have served alcohol and food in England, at private and public events and worked in a wine merchants for 2 years, where we regularly hosted wine tastings. The laws are far more relaxed in the UK though, and I'm wary of forking out the €120 or so (which I can only just afford), if it is not going to get me anywhere.
Can anyone (who has knowledge of the bar/restaurant scene in Helsinki) advise? Thanks.
Hygienipassi (again, sorry)
Re: Hygienipassi (again, sorry)
The Hygiene Pass and the Alcohol Pass are two different things. Two different exams.
I asked one of my students (who is a chef) about the Hygiene Pass for dishwashing and he said that it is unlikely that a restaurant would hire you without it.
IIRC, you cannot work in a bar without the alcohol pass.
Once you get the pass it is valid forever. So it's a one-off expense and you never know when it might be useful. There are sometimes some cheaper solutions, eg taking the exam without taking the prep course (or finding someone with the book who could lend it to you).
I know this doesn't answer your question (finding a job) - sorry
But good luck anyway.

Re: Hygienipassi (again, sorry)
you don´t need the hygienipassi to look or even get job. the law gives you 3 month time after having started to work with food to do the test. thats not the case for serving alcohol. If you don´t have the aniskelupassi you are not even allowed to off load the beer truck
