Drunken Driving offence
Re: Drunken Driving offence
Simon's accusing people not willing to compare drunk driving with over-speeding of being notorious over-speeders.
Does that make him a chronic alcoholic? He's just trying to divert the attention
I'm not justifying speeding 50km in a 30km zone, or even 100km in an 80km zone, and yes, I'm over speeding myself some times (though not in those numbers and not in a 30km zone), I'm saying that there's more tolerance on over-speeding than on drunk driving from authorities' level. That's for a reason.

I guess you can back up you last sentence then with some proof?
The guy said he had made a mistake with his one beer a mistake he didn't realise he was over the limit. You are doing 50 in a 30 zone and plough into the back of someone, you know you were speeding. Get the picture now

If you drink you KNOW your action and reaction time and your general driving abilities are influenced. You know it just as well as when you know you're speeding. "Not realising" that that one beer was over the limit is the biggest bull ever. The first beer is already over the limit if you have to drive still.
Proof of more tolerance of the authorities you will find in the level of fines and punishments. Go check out the fines list.

Perhaps. But not according to Finnish law.karel wrote:The first beer is already over the limit if you have to drive still
And that's the thing, people, the law defines what's acceptable and what isn't.

Crikey!
Poland: 0.02% (prison up to 3 years), 0,05% (driving license banned forever + prison)

Ah! But if you know the reaction times are worse, you compensate which might lead to faster reaction times!karel wrote:If you drink you KNOW your action and reaction time and your general driving abilities are influenced.

"It has been shown that if participants are told that alcohol might have a specific effect upon their performance then they are likely to compensate for this, such that the warned of effect will be almost reversed. In one study participants were told that alcohol would slow their reaction time and actually compensated to give faster reaction times under alcohol conditions (Fillmore, Blackburn 2002)."

I knew that didn't look right. If you read in more detail, you see there's a lot of variation among individual states in the USA. The lowest limit can be as low as 0.01% and 0.02%.ajdias wrote:Curiously, both North America and the UK have it at 0,08%.Mook wrote: And that's the thing, people, the law defines what's acceptable and what isn't.

As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

Re: Drunken Driving offence
Two guys sharing a prison cell:
Criminal A: You know something, you're a k*nt you are, murdering that guy
Criminal B: Yeah, but you raped that girl, drove her to suicide, so you killed too
A: But you also stole that old lady's purse, she got worried about paying the bills, turned the heating off and ended up freezing to death, so you killed her.
B: Yeah but when you ran your own business, you evaded lota of tax, the local authority had to make cuts because of a lack of income, and 3 people died waiting for life-saving operations, that's your fault!
Etc, etc, etc
Do you see my point now Simon?

Re: Drunken Driving offence
Driving when you have had a drink or two is not a good idea..It is dangerous.
Driving too fast when you have had a drink or two compounds the risk/danger.
(to both self and innocent parties)
No doubt the court will have the same opinion.

People do not become more irritable as they grow old - they simply stop making the effort to avoid annoying others.
