new career choice-nursing

Hi all. I start to realize that my masters in environment and biodiversity might not bring bread on my table during the next years. I went to discuss with the job office and we agreed that instead of searching and remaining unemployed i have two choices. Cleaner or study something that finland needs.
I choose the second solution.
So i am considering of studying to become a nurse as there are plenty of job offers. My finish is already quite good so i would guess that in 3 years it can only be better.
My dad who is a surgeon back home always had a not so high esteem of nurses but i read the program and it looks interesting anyway.
Are you or dou you know any nurses? i just would like toknow if it is a bad career choice?, is it a good job? etc...
well just some advices if you have...

I know i will have to wipe almost dead people's asses so you dont have to write it but i guess nursing is not only that...

well i maybe explained myself badly. He has respect for the job nurses do of course but he was pointing the lack of free choices and the fact that nurses were foolowing orders almost all day from doctors.
That was when i told him i will study nursing. Maybe he rather see me as a doctor than a nurse because he knows that some doctors can be assholes with nurses

Maybe in Belgium that is - Finnish nurses are pretty independent in a sense, depends though where and doing what. One path is ambulance paramedic if you want to be out and about, though male nurses also are wanted in the loony bins.

yeah i was thinking about ambulance paramedic or surgery room. Actually i didnt know that nurse was so multitasked. Illgo next week in the hospital and ask what they do...

I saw there is a math test for the entrance exam. Do u know what kind of test it is? i guess i shouldnt have any problems with that having a masters in biology but who knows. I actually didnt do any maths during the last 3 years but a lot during the 2 first years.
Well ill go and check it myself by asking some students

small anecdot:

2 weeks ago i go with my 3 years old son to the hospital for ear pain.
The doctor examine him, check fever, ears etc and then prescribes medecine.

On my way to go i say :'thanks doctor'

She said: 'Im just a nurse'



In belgium i think nurses are not allowed to give prescriptions

I have heard that in Finland nurses do many things that nurses are not allowed to do for example in the UK.

Compared to France they don't do much. No veinous access on children, no veinous access on adults unless you take an extra course... The scope of practice is also a bit more limited, for example you would find RNs in France managing daycares for young children which is not the case here or they will work in labs taking samples and conducting the analysis.

Paramedics is a special training, and only done in Finnish as far as I know:

I had sent you a reply earlier but it obviously didn't go through. I am a RN educated in Finland. I graduated last year and haven't found employment as a nurse. I have been told I need perfect Finnish both written and spoken. I have also been asked what part of Africa I was from due to the fact I speak French... My impressions are that they are not very keen on foreign nurses unless you can improve their image as Finnish hospital employing minorities.

So you don't have "perfect Finnish" even taking your education in Finnish?

Yeah i guess that finish skills are important and its normal.
So my objective is to learn sufficient finish to pass a language test taht is required for a job (dont know yet what level it is but ill try my best)
IF i do those studies and IF i graduate its in 4 years anyway i think i have plenty of time to make my finish better
For the moment im able to understand and make myself understand in everyday situations (restaurant, train station, hospital, shopping, etc).Also concerning the news i understand almost everything.

But for sure i have absolutely no notions of medical and paramedical finish except the human body parts

So i will concentrate on this topic.

I dont think i can do those studies in finish but in english and in the same time studying more finish that might be possible

for information i did a language test 1,5 years ago and i had B2.2 which is the highest score of the medium level and i m far better now than 1,5 years ago.
Also i am now studying swedish 3 hours per week (basics) cos i live on the west coast. (btw far more easy than finish)

who told you about perfect finnish? there many, plenty nurses in FIN, who do not speak or write perfect finnish (I am one of them). There is no problems for nurse find a job, especially, if she has finnish paper. I am really surprised that you have no job as a nurse with finnish paper, I know people with very pure finnish working as nurses.

No such luck for me! I tried HUS in both Helsinki and Vantaa as well as some elderly care home. I had perfect grades and good references from my teachers and clinical placements. Anyway I am working in a totally different area now, one day I hope to get back to nursing, hopefully by then I'll be perfectly fluent.

Are you sure you have exhausted all channels of using this qualification? Finland it seems is getting into the Eco side of things and is starting to care for the environment. Also there are many aspects of research I'm sure could be carried out. One huge thing is nuclear power. Im sure environmental jobs would be created from this. Also Would you consider applying for pHD? If you came up with some sort of hypothesis or something to study about finnish wildlife, lakes, forestry, nuclear energy you could approach some of the universities (even foreign universities) and see if they will fund your research..

I however am considering a career restructure too.. I have 5 years Microbiology experience I wanted to use here but havent got a qualification for it so have to study and yep you guessed it..... Its nursing. Environmental engineering was an option but Im more biology side of things so wanna start with nursing and develop from there.
