Job offer in Finland, good enough?

Post by chris010101 » Tue Oct 26, 2010 5:49 pm

Hi, I'm from Asia, and have been offered a job in Finland. I have no idea what it's like it Europe, but I am very excited! One big thing I worry about is if I can survive with the salary I will obtain. Here's the info:

Teacher for a corporation (IT)

Salary: 1050 euro/month, this is the bring home cash (after tax etc)

40 hours a week

I'm not sure if it's bad to post my salary, but that is the rough average, sorry if I might have offended anyone.

This will be in Helsinki, it will be my second job, my first job was for an accounting firm as an IT specialist. (less than a year)

Will this suffice? Will it be enough for me to survive in Helsinki?

Thank you very much! :D

Thanks for the reply everyone, i didn't know it was THAT bad. :| From an asian country perspective, that amount of salary is very high already (it's like 5-6x what i'm earning :|) but thank you, i'll have to double check on the company. Actually, need to clarify, it will be an internship job, which will turn out eventually to be a real job, however, i do not know how much i'll be earning by then. It's just that when I accept the job, i'll have to live the first few months on that salary.

Thanks really to everyone, i really want to live there in Helsinki learning about the culture and how people interact with each other, i think I can blend in well and enjoy the social company. Maybe you guys can recommend me how to find work there? Thanks again.

Well, internships are typically low paid. Is there any possibility they offer subsidised accommodation for interns? Though where I work interns typically end up renting rooms in shared accommodation, as the lowest cost option. Since it's usually only 2-3 months this works well.

Really?? Can I ask how much would be the minimum wage for a "real work"?

For an internship/traineeship that's around what one would expect to get. I don't know what kind of agreement you have with the company but by default an internship does not guarantee a job afterwards, though it's a good way to get your foot in door. The typical case in Finland is that students need work experience credit for their degree which they get through traineeship, which in turn _may_ lead to being hired later on. As already said, the 1000 euros net is enough to live on (but not much more, don't expect to save any money) in Helsinki, what you can agree for later on is what you should base your decision on. I'm assuming that the hiring company is arranging all the needed paperwork (working visa) and maybe also paying for the relocation.

Do not worry about Helsinki etc - you will never receive a residence permit with such position / salary. Especially for 'internship'.
