Job delivering ads in Jyväskylä

Post by 332415 » Sun Nov 21, 2010 11:51 pm

I plan on moving to Finland in the new year, living with my girlfriend. As soon as I'm there, I'll start applying for jobs. Speaking no Finnish, we've been told the only jobs for me until I can at least hold a good conversation in Finnish will be delivering ads.. as that's what most foreigners with little Finnish skills do.

What I'm wondering is.. does anyone know what my chances actually are of getting a job like this? How long it could take to get one. I can stay for 3 months and apply, and for an additional 3 months as a 'jobseeker'. Do you think I'd find a job like that within 6 months?

Anyone have experience of this job or.. been in my situation?

Thanks

You might find "work" in that field. But it is not a "job" that will give you an excuse for a residence permit.
You need at least a 2 year contract for that. And this work "contract" is based on the amount of spam you put into mailboxes.

Fixed term worker's residence pemit can be issued for a duration of a fixed term employment contract, there is no minimun period for that. The requirement is that the person is able to support herself/himself with the income. This income limitation is normally at least 18 hours of work per week in average.

I was (and am) in the same situation as you - moved to be with my girlfriend a few months ago, and the newspaper/flyer delivery job was one of the first I went for. There's no doubt there is the work available, I applied to Jyväskylä and they called back immediately asking me to start the next day. The problem is that without a residency permit and social security number, you can't open a bank account in Finland, so there will be no where for them to transfer your money, and as the contract is commision based, it won't be enough to get you a residency permit/social security number. When I told them my situation at the time, they immediately got cold feet and said they'd rather use someone with the required paperwork, rather than have to go through the process themselves.

On the other hand, its not the only work you can get - the options are by no means endless, but there are English-speaking companies, and translation companies/English-language nursery schools have vacancies that sometimes need to be filled. Its not at all easy, but networking and asking around as much as possible will help. Obviously a lot depends on your employment/education background as well though. If you have a background in something like IT/Engineering, your chances are significantly enhanced, as about 80% of English speaking job listings seem to be in these areas. Good luck!

I know what I need to be able to stay there for as long as I want, and this job (or any other job like this) is that.

Thanks rollodewalden for answering what I was asking :)

And that applies also for all the other options you mentioned.
