What's the minimum income as freelancer so it's worth it?

Post by hamoid » Tue Nov 23, 2010 6:12 pm

Hi all! I'm happy to have found this forum :)

I'm thinking of coming to Finland to live with my family while I study. I have Finnish nationality, but haven't lived here before.
I have a piece of software I have been selling online for a while.

Usually, when you have income you have different obligations (taxes / medical insurance / etc) than when you make no money.

What I'm wondering is: is it worth it to sell this product I created, even if I just make 300 Eur a month?

In some European countries to be able to sell something, you have to pay social security, which costs over 300 Eur / month.
So in that case it's better to be unemployed than to make little money, which I find unfortunate. That's why some
young people in Germany prefer to not have a job: working hard for 8 hours a day they might get X, and being
unemployed they might get 0.9X in state aid... But that's another topic.

So do you know if is it possible to be generating just a bit of money to pay food etc. in a way that it doesn't all
disappear in taxes and other obligations?

Thanks!

Abe

If you are a rich capitalist then you pay your own. So if you make 300 a month you live on it. If you decide to sit thumb-in arse you get 1.2X, if you get a job you get 0.9X  ...and while you are "thinking" take in consideration if you study you are not unemployed so you must survive on the student handout that is about that 300 a month... if you earn any extra that is docked off... and if you have never been here theres a bureaucratic hell to get you onto the KELA system anyways.... so don't "think" unless you "know exactly" as you are a Finn so you should know as foreigners only are explained things.

Thank you for those links Upphew, they contain a lot of useful information.

Pursuivant, how can I get to the "know exactly" part without "thinking" first? :)

Thanks, now I know where to start looking.

Don't "think you know" - look everything up, double check, without "wishful reading" and don't believe a second if if there is a possibility of a "no" they wouldn't find it faster than you can say jack robinson  .
