I need a job

Post by puscus » Fri Nov 26, 2010 1:19 pm

So let me cut a long story short. Like many on here I am a 24 year old British man now living in Helsinki. My wife (Finnish) is pregnant and I need to find work quickly. I have work experience in customer service, sales, retail, wholesale and telesales in the property, insurance, bar and fashion sectors. My qualifications other than the basic G.C.S.Es include a NVQ in Business Administration (Level 2) and ECDL (computer course). I have worked and studied since leaving school and have many years working experience. The fact of the matter is that with this experience and qualifications I could easily get a job in the UK very quickly. I am not in the UK so all of what I have done in the past decade actually doesnt help with me nothing. I have read a lot of these posts and I do know that it can be very difficult to find work here so let me politely ask that this not be the answer to 90% of the posts.

Now the reality is that I am willing to work doing anything that earns me some money to support my growing family. If needed I would clean the toilets at Helsinki station with all the crack heads laying out cold on the floor. I just need a push in the right direction as to how I can actually find these jobs. I have been searching a lot online for jobs but with no luck. Any help would be appreciated, companies to contact, bars to go to in person etc.

Also if somebody could answer me this. If I choose to study here in Finland am I liable to recieve any benefits from Kela even though I have not worked here or paid taxes?

Thank you.

Can't advise you much on the job front, but I think you might well be eligible to KELA student benefits if you manage to get accepted into some degree programme - see the criteria on this page.
If you are not a Finnish citizen, you may be entitled to financial aid with education in Finland if

* you are registered as a permanent resident of Finland in the population register system and
* your purpose for residence in Finland is something other than education (for example, work, family ties or return migration).
The studies however should be full-time studies leading to "an academic or professional qualification"... the KELA student benefits are not available to all possible studies...

Well, the first question is though - are you a resident here? If you don't have the Finnish NIS number, and registered then as an EU resident with the police who want to see you have a job or independent means - after which the magistrate gives you domicile and registers you into the population registry as "living" here. After that you are in the computer so KELA acknowledges your existance. If you are not in the population registry at your address - you do not "live" here as far as anything official is decided.

for bartending or waiting tables, or even kitchen helper, you need to have the certificate..
Another option is to try for ahtaaja positions...

Ahtaaja's need a mandatory safety training. As for bars, you can get a helper job but I'd think you need to know the numbers at least and what "gebardi, hinttilonkero ja titanicin tuho" comes out as.
