Tumman Virran Taa

Post by al_di_lochness » Wed Feb 16, 2011 9:39 am

Hi my name is Gianluca, I'm from Italy and I ask you to pardon my terrible English. I'm 44 years old and I've studied English at school when I was a child... so now I just have to emprove it... I'm new on this site.... just registered today...
The reason why I decide to register on this site is this one: some days ago I heard for the first time a song titled "Tumman Virran Taa" and something go to vibrate inside me... very strongly... so I look for information about the song and I discover that the words are in Finland.
So here I am... looking for a translation (italian if possible, English will be good the same way) to understand what they are singing... It makes thinks about something like, battle, heroes, war, death, revenge, and all that kind of emotions... strong emotions...
But what I really want to now is the reason why this song make me vibrate inside so hard....
UN CIAO DALL'ITALIA A TUTTI QUELLI CHE LEGGERANNO QUESTO POST E UN GRAZIE A CHI PROVERA' A RISPONDERMI....

That means, "Ciao from Italy to everyone that will read this post, and thaks to the ones that will try to answer me...
CIAO.
Gianluca.

That link might be a bit confusing as it leads to the last page of the conversation where the discussion has already moved on to another, unrelated poem...

The OP can find two different English translations for Tumman virran taa on the first page of the same discussion thread:
Edit: There’s yet another translation on YouTube.

Edit #2: For a bit similar (albeit not that masculine) interesting vocal harmonies, the OP might also want to check out Rajaton’s Dobbin’s Flowery Vale, Kulkue, Pakkanen, and maybe I Was Brought To My Senses (an a cappella cover of the Sting song). Or if he feels he’s strong enough to take it, Värttinä’s Äijö or Riena (another version)! (There’s also the “Brunnen G” Battle Hymn from LEXX, but that’s not Finnish... ;)
