Please advice

Post by Serine » Tue Feb 22, 2011 12:49 pm

Hi All,

I'm Serine, from India. I'm a post graduate with MBA in Finance with 2 and half yrs experience in Northern Trust company. I recently moved to Helsinki. I can speak English and some of the Indian languages. I have been applying for most relevant jobs in Helsinki to my experience, however only cause of Finnish language I'm not eligible. Please advice me on below questions:

a) With Dependent Visa can we work in Finland.
b) Are there no jobs which require only English knowledge in Helsinki.
c) Are there any free Finnish learning classes in Helsinki.
d) Is there a Labor office in Helsinki for Foreigners to register for job.

Any details on above would be very helpful.

Please advice

a- Residence permit based on work. You must find a job before you can apply for the RP.
b- very few
c- they are already overbooked
d- mol.fi

Without reasonable Finnish your chances on a job in your field are very small.
(all the Finnish and EU candidates are in line before you)
Learning Finnish takes time. Half a year is nothing.
Without RP you won't get any help for language courses or job search.

Read through the relevant topics on this forum and you'll understand how difficult your situation is.

This is bit of guesswork, but I presume you mean that you have residence permit based on a family member (presumably husband) having a residence permit here on some other grounds (most likely work)?

If so, yes you should be able to work too (it probably reads "rajoittamaton työnteko-oikeus" (= unlimited right to work) in your permit sticker) - assuming you can find a job.

Free classes no. You are late in general for enrolling for the most of the spring courses anyway, though if you're ready to pay there would be still some available here:

If you have a residence permit in Finland based on family ties, you are entitled to work and study without any limitations in Finland.

For language courses, check this (not for free but cheap): http://kuha.e-lomake.net/v2/kuha/indexk ... goria[0]=8

The työväenopisto language courses aren't free, but they're not all that expensive - €40 for a 3 month course. But as others have said, unless you're a genuine prodigy with languages, its going to take at least 3 of these courses before you get to a decent enough level of Finnish for it to help you find a job.
