Yes, I guess it could be “messages” with a typo, and that would even make more sense. In that case, the first couple of sentences could be translated as...

“The assumption is no-one will see these ‘messages’. Or if someone does, they’re not going to understand them...”

I wonder why whoever wrote the original would be using a stray English word for either hieronta or viesti, though...

Mmmhhh....maybe she told him not to send any messages. The physical stuff in the translation....would that have happened? I mean if you read it in Finnish or is it like you translated?

Here’s a bit more literal translation of the last sentence:

“‘Spiritualizing’/‘spiritualization’ [getting/becoming spiritual?] causes more pain than mere ‘physicalizing’/‘physicalization’ [getting/becoming physical?].”

From that phrasing alone, it is impossible to tell whether something “physical” has actually happened or if the writer is just philosophically waxing about the difference between mere physical interaction/interest and becoming involved on a “spiritual” level.

I wondered about that as well....maybe they are both English-speakers as well, and this was a sort of play on words.... But I think native English speakers would not normally see any close relationship between "message" and "massage"....totally different words...and they even have the emphasis on different syllables....

A bit like me thinking there is a joke somewhere with the Finnish words, tuntija and tunteja as I recently thought.... I've been advised these two words would never seem "similar" to a Finn...yet I can barely hear any difference in their pronunciations....


And to the OP:

Sad to say, but that "massage" looks unequivocal.....Time to "fold your tent", "load the camels", and "steal off into the cool desert night".... In a few months you'll be glad you did...

[Edit: Oh...and just make certain that the message was actually intended for your wife and not simply somebody's "screw up"...you wouldn't want to fall victim to that kind of misunderstanding.]

In technical (hobbyist/engineering) contexts it is common for English technical terms to seep into the related Finnish slang.

I’ve mentioned Finnish computer-hobbyist jargon (printteri, disketti, menu, ikoni etc.) a couple of times before. All these have Finnish equivalents (tulostin/kirjoitin, levyke, valikko, kuvake) but the adopted English words stuck before those Finnish terms were conceived and they can still be seen/heard in the wild.

It’s not inconceivable that someone using an English-language messaging application might pick up the word “message” to mean viesti in that specific technical context – having seen the term widely used in the user interface – and then use it with scare quotes himself when referring to that specific type of messaging... being a bit unsure as to just what those snippets of text he’s sending through the service should “officially” be called in Finnish. So, if the original word indeed was “message” something like that could explain why it was used in the midst of Finnish text.

Actually, back in the dial-up BBS days, it was common to call messages posted on such a system messu, messut, which is simply a “finnishized” casual / computer hobbyist jargon short form of the English word “message”. (Messu, messut is also a word which means either “a [Catholic] mass” or – when used in plural – “a fair”, “exhibition”, “show”. These are unrelated meanings.)
