Getting Married in Finland

I have a finnish girlfriend of the last 3 years and we want to get married,what paperwork do I need??? I will be moving there a few months after getting married.

You will need a certificate of no impediment which can be got from the embassy. It takes up to 21 days from the date of application and costs just over 150 euro. This is just an official document that declares no obvious impediment against your marriage. This is all that is required unless you have been married previously. If so you will need your official divorce papers to declare that you are no longer officially married.
Check out the maistraati website which offers info in english and also the british embassy/helsinki website.

But you can get that from the embassy only if you are resident in Finland. And you wiont be a resident if youre flying in from the UK, so its the local registry office back in blighty. And then you need to get it apostilled.

I am a permanent resident in Finland (I'm from the Netherlands) and I am going to get married to a Fin this summer. However, the ambassy told me I cannot get this paper from the ambassy. I have to get it from the Netherlands' city hall.

Greetings, everyone.

I have a question concerning this very same subject so instead of opening a new topic I decided to post it here. I hope there´s no problem.

I´ll try to keep it short.
I have a girlfriend (finnish) wich I know for almost 7 years now. We met (in real life) recently -last year-, she stayed in my house for 2 weeks and in the end of 2010 I traveled to Finland and we lived together for 3 months, all the time I had with my turist visa (I´m brazilian). During those 3 months I tried to find a job to have my residence permit papers signed... of course I failed... without the permit and not being able to speak finnish.

Anyway, I came back to Brazil and we decided to get married since we have no way to be together instead of doing that. We can´t live together for 2 years for I cannot stay in Finland for more than 3 months, same for her in here. I have the right of requesting a portuguese passport (my grandfather was portuguese) but the process may take years and we are not willing to stay appart for any longer.

To my questions:

I´ll go to Finland soon and we will get married. But I´m going with a turist visa (3 months) again.
My main concern is... the process may and will probably take more than 3 months wich means my time will be over.
Will I be able to stay there until the process is over or will I need to come back and then return?

I wrote so much for this single question... I feel stupid.

P.S. We are living in Kuopio, if that helps answering, somehow.

Yes (I must say I'm surprised if you really tried to find the answer to this question and couldn't either here or at Migri web site).

Based on what you wrote, I would expect you'll be approved without problems. With some luck, maybe the waiting time with Kuopio police isn't even that long.

Typically I would recommend getting the permit in advance, so you'd be free to study, try to find work (and be covered health care benefits etc.) from day one, but I guess you want to come here as soon as possible.

I would also try to get that Portuguese passport. It would be faster than Finnish one, and being an EU citizen offers benefits.

Yeah, I read a bit more after posting... but every case is a case. So I decided to ask anyway.

We just want to be together as fast as we can but at the same time I don´t want to rush. So I´ll probably work here in Brazil to save some money for I don´t know if I´ll be able to get a job (fast) in there. I hope knowing portuguese, english, spanish and a bit of french help me in this.

I´m graduated in International Relations/Affairs, my main plan is to start working in there... if I get in trouble with that then maybe applying for a Master´s course can be good.

By the way... I can´t get the permit in advance because we are not married yet. And I don´t qualify in any of the other "requirements". So I can´t apply for the residence permit.

As for the portuguese citzenship... if you knew about all the burocracy and time it takes. It may take more than 3 years.

And it´s quite sad because I called to Portugal and found my grandfather´s documents but they want my grandmother´s (brazilian) one. I think about trying but when I see the list of documents it brings me down.

Now that certificate that I haven´t been married is bugging me... I sent an e-mail to the finnish embassy in here asking for more info on how to that.

I understood that. For marriage of course one of you has to make a plane trip with the right set documents with him/her. It varies by case by case if it is worth doing that in advance before you intend to move together permanently.
