Kysymykset

Post by weijie » Wed Mar 16, 2011 7:42 pm

I have several questions hear.
When I check the dictionary I found a phraze ' taipunut muoto', such as 'Tuotettu on sanan tuottaa taipunut muoto. ' But what is it exactly and how can I use it?
And 'kirjoja', dictionary say 'Kirjoja on seuraavien sanojen monikon partitiivi', what is 'seuraavien sanojen?'
I saw some advertisement, 'älä päästä naapuriasi voitolle', and another one, 'tässä on mielikuvitus liikkeellä.' pleae tell me what does it mean?

Here is my guess:

taipua = to conjugate, so taipunut muoto = conjugated form
Tuotettu on sanan tuottaa taipunut muoto = Tuotettu is the word tuottaa´s conjugated form.
seuraavien sanojen = following/next words. Seuraava sana = following/next word
Älä päästä naapuriasi voitolle = Don´t let your neighbour win
Tässä on mielikuvitus liikkeellä = Here your imagination is on the move (astir?)

I would think as follows:

1. taipunut muoto= "changed/conjugated form"

2. Tuotettu on sanan tuottaa taipunut muoto.=literally:
..."Changed is word to produce conjugated form."

[Edit: OK ...some corrections...we need to add some quotation marks to the original..
"Tuotettu" on sanan "tuottaa" taipunut muoto.

So..."Tuotettu" is the conjugated form of the word "tuottaa".]

3. 'seuraavien sanojen="following words"...genitive plural

4. Kirjoja on seuraavien sanojen monikon partitiivi.
Now this is really tough for me to "unscramble"..

..."Books/spectrum are following words plural partitive."
"There is spectrum of following words plural partitive."...OK, I give up.... :(...what does this mean?....:D

[Edit: Same sort of thing....
"Kirjoja" on seuraavien sanojen monikon partitiivi.
..."Kirjoja" is the plural partitive of the following words."]

5.'älä päästä naapuriasi voitolle.....tässä on mielikuvitus liikkeellä.
..."Don't let your neighbour win." "Here is imagination on the move."
....Sounds like something to do with the sale of lottery tickets...:D

[Edit: Oh...I came back to edit my mistakes ...and saw Satish's post... ]

Tuotettu is the passive past participle of the verb tuottaa. See the linked page for usage examples.

Thanks...I forgot about that site.... I didn't think that kirjoja was actually being discussed in the context of itself, not as a descriptor for ....as wiktionary defines it:

"A collection of sheets of paper bound together to hinge at one edge, containing printed or written material, pictures, etc." ...at least for one of the words...

...and I see there are two words that have kirjoja as the plural partitive:

kirja...the obvious one..."book"
kirjo....a new word for me...."spectrum"....

I suppose kirjo was derived from kirja...???... one of the definitions of "spectrum" is ..."A range; a continuous, infinite, one-dimensional set, possibly bounded by extremes"....sort of similar to a "book"...if you have some imagination...

[Edit: Ok ..a little more "etymology"...the verb, kirjoa...(which is also the partitive singular form of kirjo/"spectrum") means "to embroider"...and in earlier times the word, kirja meant a "carved mark or decoration"...so I guess all these words are related....a no "brainer" I would say... Interestingly, the English word, "book"/German, "Buch" comes from "beech" as in "beech tree"... the smooth bark was used by early people as a writing surface.... :D]
