More on the Partitive

I found this receipe in HS...Karjalan piirakat....Russian style...

I thought I might get some further insights on using the partitive...

Resepti: Kalitka-piirakat

Kuoritaikina:
1 1/2 dl smetanaa
1/2 dl maitoa
3–4 dl ruisjauhoja
1/2 tl suolaa

Täyte:
1 1/2 dl hirssiryynejä
5 dl vettä
5 dl maitoa....viisi desiliitraa maitoa Is this correct? Maitoa is an uncountable noun and I think that is why it is in the partitive, not because of viisi...?? If it were yksi I think it would still be written...yksi desiliitra maitoa...not yksi desiliitra maito..??
1 tl suolaa= and I think this would be written...yksi teeluskallinen suolaa. Right??

You're half right. Desilitraa is in the partitive because it's preceded by the number 5, but maitoa is in the partitive because it's modified by the expression of quantity 5 desilitraa... countability doesn't have anything to do with it. Or, rather, countability doesn't determine the choice of the partitive vs. the nominative, it simply determines the choice of partitive singular vs. partitive plural (compare 1 kg suolaa and 1 kg mansikoita).

It's a lot easier to just say categorically that expressions of quantity take the partitive, and then learn the exceptions, than it is to learn how to use the partitive from the ground up.

Right. Though it could possibly be used as an uncountable noun in some cases... for example, in an industrial bakery setting: 10 litraa ((kanan)munan)keltuaista. Or even in home kitchen: “Sivele juuston pintaan keltuaista.”
