Hi everyone!

Sby asked me to update my info regarding YKI test if I passed or not.

I passed.

But i would tell the same things about exam, it was really hard.

To be fair if you're at the level required to pass that test you probably don't need this info in English no?

Sounds like a bad practice course, indeed. Mine was something like 60e (though covered by the course I was on at the time), lasted a week at 7 hours/day and we went through realistic simulations of each part of the test. We even visited the classroom where the speech and listening sections were held, and went through a couple trial runs of using the headphones and shouting over each other during the speaking part. The most important part of preparing for the YKI is definitely getting a grasp on exactly what needs to be done for each section so no time is wasted with understanding the instructions. After that, either the material is familiar enough or it isn't. YLE has something of a training website as well: http://yle.fi/java/yki/index.nvl

It seems that you had YKI TESTI already?
If, good job for you.Congratulations!!!
If not, try to put yourself into someone's shoes who may not have been here in Finland as you are. Or such as higly skilled in languages as you are.

I only recomend to all foreigners like me try to get "course for YKI" instead of "Helsinki University/whatever university/any kind of school keskitaso course"

And of course I can search in english because it is one of the most spoken in the world, yet i see that Finland still works on it:)

@ cicicel: But you say in your first post that you did a 3-4 level course. Then your Finnish should be good enough to read information on the internet... right? Or haven't you done that 3-4 level course?

I am not having this test to become a finnish citizen

but it is always good to improve language skills ... isnt it butterflychick3?
FYI, I havent completed level 4.

By the way, have you been a "finnish" for a long time?

Not done the yki test myself, waiting until my Finnish skills are good enough.

Yes, that is what I learnt after having the YKI.
Anyway, good luck for you and everyone who plans to have it for the first time or again.

I agree.. good luck to everyone studying towards this. I am planning to take it in the August batch... not especially for citizenship.. more as a language goal to aim towards (and then as a benchmark to improve on when I fail

)

It's a bit of scam - considering I answered half of the speaking section wrong (ie, I didn't realise that we were supposed to follow some kind of direction when answering the questions...I just rambled aimlessly on my own.)

Exam technique was really important...ie it's quantity not quality; answer all the questions - most of the marks are attained by just saying something, even if it's not right.

However, I'm a little disappointed, since it was a very hard exam but easy to get a pass - but still I'm nowhere near able to get by day-to-day at work.

Onwards to a higher level exam I guess..level 5-6. Maybe by the end of that hard-graft there'll be a sea-change in my fluency.

..I grabbed the book "Suomea paremmin" and went throught that. I also went back to the exercice books we used at Helsingin seudun kesäyliopisto and went through those - that cracks the reading and writing and construction sides of thing.

I find that talking finnish to other non-natives in a class is a bit of a waste of time. BUT, it would be nice to know how others build up answers to questions ie Talk at length about your country, organise a party etc. Those kinds of answers are actually quite hard to find on Finnish web pages etc on the net when looking for examples.

Can't believe I passed. It was a terrible exam. 5 hours of 'well I can always try again in August..'

By the way, if anyone wants to buy this book - and CD - its yours for 35 euro (normally goes about 50 including postage). You'll be able to sell it for 30 euro after using it the second time - no doubt.
