Hey,
I'm currently visiting a german grammar school and about to finish my 9th grade in summer. For a special reason i would like to finish my school at an international school in finland. I have bothered with this idea since about one week and as I unfortunately had to discover was the application time for High Schools already in february/march. My quest is now, if there's still a way for me to apply for the 10th grade starting this summer.
Thanks for your efforts.
Would be glad about a reply
Morris
Applying for International School from abroad
Re: Applying for International School from abroad
Just contact the IB schools individually and ask them. There is only one "international" school in Finland - ISH and that costs around 15,000e per year. But there are some IB schools which are free. None of them are boarding schools. Are you travelling with your parents? How would you live in Finland?
Re: Applying for International School from abroad
Thanks for the fast reply.
I tried to contact "The English School", cause there is written application time is in march, but they do not answer. Certainly I cant spend 15.000 per year. This one for instance is bout 300 per semester. I thought they would have a boarding school, cause they take students from abroad. But this wouldn't be such a problem. I still have other options of housing there. Oh, and I'm travelling alone.

Re: Applying for International School from abroad
What will you study for if you go to The English School? 'A' Levels? The Finnish Matriculation exam? Not sure I see the point in that
You probably won't get a KELA number if you are an unaccompanied minor (are you an EU national?) and without a KELA/ID number no school will take you since they won't get a government subsidy for you.
When the schools say they accept foreign students, it means they accept applications from families living abroad but who intend to move to Finland. I think you are going to hit a ton of red tape if you move here alone.
To get into an IB school (Ressu, SYK, Mattliden, Etelä Tapiola, Tikkurila, ISH) you would need to sit an exam (Maths and English) and you would probably need a reference from your current school. In fact, one way would be to try for an exchange programme through your current school. The IB schools are highly selective - they seem to cream off some of the brightest students in Finland, very competitive.
Another alternative is the European School http://www.esh.fi (though I believe it is pretty full, not sure about the High School though - it offers the European Baccalaureat). Again, does not take boarders as far as I know.

Re: Applying for International School from abroad
I googled their website and it actually states:kraut wrote:I tried to contact "The English School", cause there is written application time is in march, but they do not answer..
"Admission from Abroad
Students applying from abroad also need to participate in the national joint application (yhteishaku) in order to have themselves listed on the official selection list. The application time is 28.2. – 18.3.2011. "
It's May now...
Re: Applying for International School from abroad
Have you tought about going as an exchange student instead? Then you wouldn't have to think about boarding. It's probably too late for next semester, though.
Re: Applying for International School from abroad
Well, let me tell you my case. My girlfriend lives in Finland and we're tired of seeing every 2 or 3 months, and this for the next three years.
So some weeks ago i somehow encountered a webpage of IB school. But I had to discover, that entrance exams are already being taken now and registration time was in march. I'd be so glad, if someone here knows a way for me to still change school this summer. Besides I'm afraid I can't go there after 10th grade anymore, cause their courses already start in class 10.
I'd be able to spend 500€ maximum per month. Oh, and I´m not so bad at school. My average is about 1,7. (1-best mark, 6-worst one)
I thinkl i needed to take an IB, cause my knowledge of Finnish isn't so great. I already informed about studying at The German School in Helsinki, but they principally only accept german students whose parents live in Finland.
