Passport Question
Passport Question
Hello,
I was born in Finland, as was my mother and her parents, etc. I moved out of Finland shortly after birth and have not lived there since. I had a Finnish passport when I was a child and did make yearly visits to the country in my youth, but the passport has long expired (I am now in my 20's).
Would I be able to renew this old passport of mine, or not? I currently hold a Canadian passport.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you.

Re: Passport Question
I don't currently live in Finland. I just wanted to know if it would be possible to renew the passport if I ever wanted to move to Finland in the future. Plus, it's always handy to have a Finnish passport...
Re: Passport Question
If you are a citizen, you can get a passport. Have you done what is required to keep your citizenship?
moving is in the bad <-> crazy continuum

As a supplementary material to what others have already said:

andRetaining Finnish citizenship at the age of 22
A person who is a citizen of both Finland and some other nation will automatically lose his or her Finnish citizenship at the age 22 if his or her ties with Finland have not been sufficiently close. However, citizenship will remain valid on the basis of sufficiently close ties with Finland. For further information on when contact has been sufficient, please consult the below Finnish Immigration Service information sheet:
http://www.migri.fi/netcomm/content.asp?article=3595You may acquire citizenship by declaration, if you lost your Finnish citizenship on the basis of an insufficient connection to Finland on or after 1 June 2003 when reaching the age of 22, and you were not informed of how to retain your citizenship. The declaration may be submitted in Finland or abroad using form KAN_7. A fee is charged for the processing of declaration.

Re: Passport Question
And "showing sufficient ties" might also mean military service.

Re: Passport Question
Thanks for all the helpful info!
As much as I love the country I was born in, I am not too keen on military service! haha
Perhaps I should ask some of my Finnish cousins and aunts what they think on this issue.

"haha"... that irritates me.. Military service is something you shouldnt take lightly, after 1000 years under foreign power we managed to get our own power to get our independence and that came from every man and woman standing unite against oppressor and by great cost.
Every man has obligation, not for himself but for nation and others, to get training for preventing bad times to ever come again. If you dont want to be part of that defence then you dont deserve finnish passport.

Re: Passport Question
When was finland under foreign rule for 1000 years? Are you reading sweedish mathematical text-books?

Re: Passport Question
Good point. Finland was under foreign rule for about 600-700 years. Before that... anarchy in the Finland, woohoo!vagrant wrote:When was finland under foreign rule for 1000 years? Are you reading sweedish mathematical text-books?

Aha, and before that was Ladoga and Novgorod, and of course they were populated only by Slavic and Norse people, but somehow their gens (I mean Norse) disappeared only some finnish left, finnish expansion probably….
According to genetic inverstigations Ruriks are of finnic origin.
So Russia was under Finnish rule for 600 years

Re: Passport Question
Believe me...I am not trying to be a freeloader. I am well aware of the sacrifices citizens make for their country, including those my own family made. Everybody has differing views on the military...it doesnt make me less patriotic. Even so, my situation would be rather complicated due to a disability from birth.
