I saw that film about 4 years ago (Cine Espoo in Tapiola). It was filmed in Canada and makes no reference to Finland whatsoever. But it was OK.
The book is great but (IMO) the English translation is not terrific.

I found the Finnish "Jäniksen vuosi" very boring. The French version looks much better. It is all right that the French version does not mention Finland because it is of no importance in what country the story takes place but I find it slightly amusing that in the French film also the main character is called Vatanen.

The essence of the book is its Finnishness. Vatanen is a Finn, the things he does, his ideas are all about being Finnish. If you take Finland out of it then it's just a crazy Frenchman talking to a rabbit. But I thought Christophe Lambert did a good job and the hare was OK, there was no hint of a Disneyesque "Thumper" in there. It was OK as a film but it missed what was good about the book.
Have you read the French translation? It is much better than the English one (IMO).

I took 3 years French in high school. I have forgotten most of it and even if I remembered everything I learned I would still not be able to read the book in French. Three years French is not enough.

Yes, we have the DVD at home and I think I watched it with English subtitles (or maybe Finnish subtitles). Can't remember if I enjoyed it though, I should watch it again.
The "Princess" film (about a young woman in an asylum who believes she is a princess, true story) is on DVD with English subtitles. I definitely intend to watch that soon, they have it in Filmtown.

I have not seen "Prinsessa".

I very seldom watch Finnish films because usually they are not well written and they very seldom have an interesting story to tell. "Prinsessa" may be an exception. Two reviews in English here :
