working in university

Post by belfastboy » Sun May 29, 2011 2:49 pm

I am hoping to settle in Finland with my finnish wife and kids in the future. I hope to embark on a career lecturing in university, a role I perform here on a part time basis , and am suitably qualified for UK.

Are there any special educational requirements over and above a teaching qualification and masters degrees etc needed.

I understand international schools need a degree in education and a teaching qualification. My masters is not in education but politics and social science although I am a qualified teacher - do i need to study for the other degree if I wish to go into international schools?

University work would be my preferece however

Advice greatfully received

At least in the actual universities usually they want you to have a doctorate in the relevant subject.

Most of the international schools are IB World Schools so you would need IB training and/or experience.

The UAS (Universities of Applied Sciences) might be easier to get into than the "real" universities. I seem to remember they have their own teaching diploma, but you can usually take it AFTER you have secured a post. http://www.haaga-helia.fi/en/school-of- ... -education

For teaching in Uni, you would need to get all your qualifications through the system. So you might have a shock in store if your Masters is from one of the universities on the "list". There was a thread on here a week or two ago from a guy who couldn't get into Oulu Uni because his Masters was from Middlesex "University". viewtopic.php?f=20&t=53600

But if you have experience and references then it is far from impossible. Probably not full-time though (or even close).

I hope to embark on a career lecturing in university,
Well at least you do have a masters, theres a lot of people with Bachelors and they get upset they can't get a job emptying pisspots in a kindergarten without a masters degree in education. Actually, the smaller kids you teach the more education you need over here.

With the UAS's and vocational its basically a master's degree (in your subject)+ the minor (35) in pedagogics as in "teaching cert". You need to get your paperwork "accredited", and then maybe look into getting something upgraded if required. With an EU degree it should be a formality. But - you need to do it. The thing is you are not "qualified" unless your paperwork is there, and as teaching positions are "tenures" the "office" of a "qualified teacher" is what is says on the paper. Of course you can be qualified anyplace else, and you can be hired as a teacher, but your salary will be that of an "unqualified", and usually a temporary office, which makes the night and day in salary and benefits.

There's probably not all that much demand for teachers of politics and social science in comprehensive and upper secondary schools in Finland.

be aware that there are no vacancies!!!
but check altoo university ( they open for international recruitment ) they probably would have teaching fellows positions...
