Hobbies in Finnish

Post by 202202 » Mon May 30, 2011 8:15 pm

Hello,
I'm learning Finnish on my own and I have some questions: What is "hobbies" in Finnish? Is it "harrastuksia" or "harrastus"? When I translate using google, the translations of these words are both "hobbies".
And what is the genetive form of "harrastat"? is it "harrastaa"? And this verb means "be interested in"?
Hope you can help
Thanks in advance

The word harrastus (“hobby”) can be declined in all Finnish cases (see here and here as well.) This also goes for the plural, harrastukset.

So “hobbies” can take, depending on the situation, the following grammatical cases:

harrastukset (nominative plural)
harrastusten, harrastuksien (genitive plural)
harrastuksia (partitive plural)
harrastuksina (essive plural)
harrastuksiksi (translative plural)
harrastuksissa (inessive plural)
harrastuksista (elative plural)
harrastuksiin (illative plural)
harrastuksilla (adessive plural)
harrastuksilta (ablative plural)
harrastuksille (allative plural)
harrastuksitta (abessive plural)
harrastuksineen (comitative plural)
harrastuksin (instructive plural)

Verbs don’t have genitive forms. Some derivatives of verbs, such as verbal adjectives (participles) and verbal nouns (the fourth infinitive, for example), can be declined in cases, though.

The verb harrastaa means “to engage in (a hobby/activity)”, “to take an interest in (a hobby/activity)”. Harrastaja, “he who harrastaa”, “a hobbyist”, is someone who actively “practices” a hobby or a comparable pastime activity.
