Things to do in Finland with baby

Post by -Kielo- » Sun Jun 05, 2011 6:43 pm

Hey guys!

My Finnish husband, daughter and I will be holidaying in Finland in July for 4 weeks when our daughter will be 10-11 months old. Last time I was in Finland (exchange student), I didn't have a baby so I was wondering what the best attractions are for a young family? I've spent ages searching the net and haven't come up with much. The only things I can think of are, of course, Muumimaailma and the childrens' zoo and aquarium at Särkänniemi. Which places do you like taking your babies? Doesn't have to be touristy! All suggestions welcome :D

We'll be situated near Pori for the majority of the time but will travel around and spend a reasonable amount of time in the Turku area as well, if that helps.

I know a lot of babies are like that, but my daughter does need to be kept entertained! She'll cry more if she's bored than in a place which would seem overstimulating -- she just loves action and sights and sounds :D

I'll definitely try the family park idea, thanks! Do anyone know of any family events happening around July? And can anyone recommend their favourite swimming centre with a good pool area for young kids? Despite living in Australia, we haven't actually taken her swimming yet!

I think you'll find practically all swimming centres (indoor places) will be closed during the summer.

In the Pori area I would suggest Porin maauimala (outdoor pools), the Yyteri beaches if the weather is nice and of course the green and leafy Kirjurinluoto area (http://www.kirjurinluoto.fi) which has play areas for children, also a little beach for sand activities and some animals (peacocks etc) for children to look at. Low-key but relaxing - and there's no entrance fee.

Lucky we won't be having anymore, then ;)

But seriously, I know a 10 month old cannot be compared to a 2 or 3 year old in terms of hyperactivity and I'm aware of what's to come. But I have seen babies older than my daughter who prefer to just sit and stare and won't get involved whereas my daughter charges right in there. She hasn't been an "eat, sleep, be with mum and dad" baby since she was a newborn. Just different personalities, I guess.

Thanks, luulio, I forgot about Porin maauimala! I was living near Pori for a year but didn't get a chance to check it out then, so we definitely will this summer. And the peacocks on Kirjurinluoto is a great idea because Lily LOVES animals. If anyone can think of any other places where you can interact with animals, let me know!
