Summer writing Finnish essays

Post by Siquedi » Mon Jun 06, 2011 1:44 pm

Hi:

I'm studying Finnish and I've realized that, to me, writing in Finnish is the hardest part. I commit a lot of mistakes, even though I know the grammar :(

This is why I set myself a weekly Finnish essay (or two) as a summer goal. But I need someone to correct them, or I'll never know what I'm doing wrong. And who could help me better with Finnish than Finnish people?? :D . But I warn you: You'll need a lot of patience :)

If any of you is interested in helping me, I would be forever grateful to him/her (and maybe there will be some way to return the favour, apart from my friendship: teaching my language (Spanish)...we can talk about it)

My email is siquedi@yahoo,es

Thanks a lot in advance for your attention and help!!

How about just posting them here? You'd surely get more feedback that way.

I second JJ’s suggestion. Agreeing to do it one-to-one, in private, can easily feel like a chore... but when done in public, anyone can comment without feeling forced to and you’ll usually get second opinions on points which might need further clarification.

Actually that was my first thought, but I rejected it because I thought I would be a pain in the neck for the forum and you'd get tired of me. Maybe I could become a "spam person"!! :D

But now.... as you say it.....don't know.... let me think about it

Thank you!!

Make it a series of posts which can be easily told apart from the generic discussion by their subject line. When posting a new essay, you could for instance prefix the subject line with the text “An Essay in Finnish: ...” and replace the three dots with the title of your essay.

Make a thread about it and keep all the essays in that thread, then you are deffo not spamming the forum.

Great initiative!

Except that consolidating everything in a single thread makes commenting the individual essays a mess. (If new essays have already been posted and you’d like to comment an older one, the comments concerning various different essays would be dispersed in the thread, instead of hanging neatly under that single essay they concern. One of the things that makes simple “flat threads” web forums so awkward when compared to actual threaded discussion systems with sub-branches in threads...)

+1 or 2 threads per week... certainly not too much even if done by multiple people.

Ok, you persuaded me!! :D

So, I think the easiest way to deal with this is: every week start a new thread (or two) with the title "An essay In Finnish: ...." (as Jukka said)

Now I need to think on topics to write about, any ideas??

Maybe by next week we can start!!.

Thank you for your support!!

Sounds like a good idea....I wouldn't be concerned at all about whether people think you are "spamming" or not.... Just "write away" and see what happens.... Those who are interested will respond...at least some of the time, and, of course, when they have the time;, those who aren't intrested will probably, most of the time, simply ignore the thread ...:D

...And interesting that you find writing the hardest part of learning the language...for me it's actually speaking....it has been the same for French...the written part is not too difficult for me, just requires enough time and exposure....:D

Well, the thing is that I just practise my Finnish speaking skills with my teacher during the school year. But in the summer time I've got no one to talk to (in Finnish :D ). This is why I started this thread, 'cause I don't need to be face to face with anyone to carry out that task But yes, you're right. If I had to rank them, they would be:

- Speaking
- Writing
- Listening
- Reading
