Joensuu Maternity Care

Post by EFoppert » Tue Jun 14, 2011 7:37 pm

I will be moving to Joensuu with my husband in the fall and trying to figure out whether we should continue to pursue homebirth or whether we will like the hospitals enough. Any information about the type of care in Joensuu would be appreciated and any information on midwifes or doulas would be awesome as well. Thank you.

Do I assume correctly that you are not moving from elsewhere in Finland?

Homebirths here are not very popular, I know they do happen in small numbers though. Ive asked someone about a group so Ill get back to you.

I lived in Joensuu a long time ago but Ive had my children elsewhere. The general healthcare there is very good and its one hospital that you would have to go, no choice (although its possible its changed since Ive been there). All your care will be at neuvola, its a pregnancy and childrens centre near your home and of course the hospital for scans and anything further.

I really doubt you would have any luck hiring any midwife or doula, Joensuu is a really small place!

Thanks Sara for your reply.
What do you mean by having trouble hiring a doula or midwife? Do you mean for a home birth? Is it not true that the majority of care in the hospital during labor and delivery is done by midwives? I'm just trying to figure out my if my information sources have been accurate so far.
Any more information you have would be great!

Yes, but like you said in the hospital. Very, very few will do home births. For finding a midwife that would do a home birth the link Sara provided is the place to go, really. Doulas, both for home birth or hospital births might be a little easier to find, I would guess. But again, the link Sara provided would probably be the best place to find doulas, too.

I found this blog that might help, but in Finnish: http://kotisynnytys.blogspot.com/
You can also google for "kotisynnytys".

this is the website of the mother's group in Joensuu, they can provide you with all information necessary. Although the website is in Finnish, they have several of them who speak excellent English. http://www.liekku.net/
