Lakeland- places worth visiting

Post by te-tris » Thu Jul 28, 2011 8:57 am

Hello everyone!
I'm going to Finland this year and I wanted to visit the Finnish lakeland :) I'll probably visit Helsinki too, as there is going to be a concert of my girlfriend's favourite band [this is actually the main purpose of the visit] but except that I'm not really into walking around cities and visiting all the museums, etc. if you know what I mean. I would like to see the landscapes, the nature of Finland. I've read about the lakeland and I believe it to be just the right place for this... unless I'm wrong and there's a better place to see? Anyhow, it would be great if you could recommend some places particularly worth visiting there and possibly some best kinds of accommodation- but mind you- I'm not particularly well-off so I'm looking for a rather cheap but comfortable place to stay :) you know- just for the night as we will probably spend the whole time walking around and seeing as much as we can during those few days. I've read that hostels are cheap but they are rather 'meeting places' than places for peaceful rest, as someone has put it on some other forum, so please be kind not to include them in your recommendation, unless, of course, that opinion is not true and we will be able to have some personal space there and will not be interrupted by a bunch of 'party people' after the whole day of hiking ;)
Anyway, thank you in advance for all the answers! I hope I didn't get too 'lengthy' with my first post

See here for a list of national parks. Note that there’s also one near Helsinki (Nuuksio). (Another famous one is [ur=http://www.outdoors.fi/destinations/nat ... ault.aspxl]Koli[/url], but see the others on the map and their pages as well.)

If lakes are what you want to see, that’s an obvious choice... The lake Saimaa, for example.

Maybe you’ll find something on these sites (check out the sidebar links on VirtualTourist):
You could also use Google Maps for planning your trip, checking out various destinations virtually by dropping the little yellow man on the street/road map near interesting places. Or modify the example searches laid out in this post for the destinations you’re interested in.

I would also suggest just walking around Helsinki, sitting down to have a cup of coffee. Take one of the free city bicycles, and just bicycle a round for awhile. Take the ferry to Suomenlinna, which is a fortified island outside Helsinki. There is a public ferry that you pay a bus ticket for. Perhaps take a boat ride to check out the archipelago.

Um... btw... you say "this year"... as in when? Please don't say October-November!

@Jukka Aho
Thank you very much for your comprehensive reply :)
I didn't mean lakes only but beautiful landscapes in general. I do not have time now to check out the websites you've recommended but tomorrow I'll visit them and hopefully will find something interesting.

@CH
this year as in September :) most probably... as I said- the trip is to be organized around the concert... my girlfriend is very much into Finnish rock bands and, consequently, would love to see one playing live, which, at least in some cases, is possible only in Finland. I'll probably survive those few hours as long as they are singing in Finnish and I don't have to listen to the 'glamour-rock-love-ballads' in English ;p [no offense to any fans intended] besides, when she finally visits Finland she'll be the happiest person in the world which makes me a happy man too. She also wants to visit Turku- anything interesting there?

We'll definitely have a cup of coffee there... btw can you recommend some dishes from Finland's cuisine that you consider 'must-haves' when in Finland?
Bike ride seems to be a great idea too!

Thanks a lot once again! If you have any tips concerning 'cultural code' [certain country-specific behaviors that are not particularly welcome or- the other way round- are required] I would be more than grateful ;)

I hope I don't seem just plain lazy with me asking all those questions here instead of searching the web but I believe that first hand information from 'the natives' is not even closely comparable to anything I could find on touristic offers so please forgive me the inquisitive nature and give all advice you can ;)

Oh, I don't know...I found lots of interesting stuff on the web to check out on my recent trip to Finland....

....some of it you encounter when you're looking for something else.... Like this:

Patsas puisto

...near Parikkala [Edit: NORTH] of Lappeenranta....as far east as you can go...the Russian border is about 200 or 300 metres further east.... It's a weird place, but fascinating too...the guy spend forty years working on it ...and died a couple of years ago...

Or this beautiful place...
Petkeljärvi National Park ....lakes, ponds, swamps and harjut (eskers)....pine forests everywhere....and the mosquitoes make sure you keep moving and don't loiter... In eastern Finland...near Ilomantsi....

Another place:

Valamon luostari....you don't have to be religious to wander around here and appreciate the beauty...manmade and natural....and lakes and pine forests are everywhere around here... Somewhere in deepest, darkest Savo... ...and nearby was this place below which for some reason fascinated me:

Varistaipale ....the largest lock system in Finland....maybe mechanical stuff doesn't interest you...

And on rainy days what's wrong with museums....I found the Finnish ones really well organized and comprehensive.... Finnish tetrapyloctomy, no doubt....

The Bank of Finland Rahamuseo ..."Money Musem" in Helsinki on Snellmaninkatu....excellent and extensive...I could hardly be dragged out of there...and it wasn't even a rainy day...:D

Then there are the following:...you can google them...all were excellent:

Finnish Museum of Natural History...Helsinki...and the "test" for me, anyway, were the displays on stuff from my part of the world..western Canada....and it was all accurate...so, of course, I would naturally then make the assumption that the stuff on Finland would be accurate, as well...

University of Helsinki Museum...I liked the dentistry and veterinary sections, but there was lots of interesting stuff

The Railway Museum in Hyvinkää...if you like looking at old railway engines and cars....I found the Tsar's train fascinating...Alexander II's imperial train, built in the 1870s, more or less, for his trips in Finland....and I seem to remember reading it went as far as Copenhagen....maybe on a train ferry???...

Someone has already mentioned Suomenlinna....and there is the other famous linna...Olavinlinna at Savonlinna.....this was once the border between the Swedish empire and whatever they called the Russian empire at that time...

Lots of interesting stuff...and I did hear about a lot of things by "word-of-mouth" as well.....

[Edit: Oh yes...and Loviisa..which I had remembered vaguely after reading something on the web...It's on the south coast east of Helsinki.... The old part of the town ...lots of old wooden houses...was mainly built in the late 1700s to replace the town of Hamina, further to the east, which was lost in one of the Russo-Swedish wars.... It's a boating area now and quite pleasant. the old border crossing has a bit of stuff...not much...and there is now a hydro-electric power plant which you can see from the highway...on the old border river. But pick your times...we were there on a Sunday and the traffic heading back towards Helsinki was nightmarish....returning from a weekend in St. Petersburg, I guess...and I can only guess what state some of the drivers would have been in ... And there was lots of Russian truck traffic as well...:D]

[Edit2: And I almost forgot this place: Finnish Forest Museum at Punkaharju....in the very eastern part of Savo....Fascinating museum, and the natural setting doesn't get much nicer....lakes, harjut and forest all around. And if you wonder why Finns are the way they are....this Museum will help with your "cultural" education....:D I didn't spend enough time here, and will likely be back again someday...]

We don't have them anymore. Too much freedom for us to handle.

I visited here a couple of weeks ago, it's definitely worth a visit. It's just... strange but also amazing because Veijo created literally hundreds of these sculptures and they are all very unqiue. I had put off going before because it's out of the way, but then heard that the guy had died last year and the garden is getting overgrown (which was in evidence) so we went out of our way this year. Glad we did :)

We drove north to Posio straight after, past the Silent People near Suomussalmi. A weird day all round.

Yes...that's the hydro plant you can see from the main road....but I actually did want to see the nuclear plant...I think that was how I first heard about Loviisa... Yeah..I know...Weird!! Who wants to see a nuclear power plant!?!... ...But the plant is well south of the actual town and the logistics of getting there and trying arrange a tour, etc. ended that objective ....:D

The original highway during the Swedish era is to the north of hydro-electric plant...there is a bridge crossing the reservoir...a replacement bridge built a long time ago,,,I guess after the reservoir was created... and some signage talking about this being the actual border crossing ....I saw a few stone "mileage" posts, though I don't know if they were original....it was very pleasant in there...and on the "Russian" side, the property owner had been cutting timber....it was piled up along the road and the smell of pine permeating the air was beautiful....:D

Yes...it was getting overgrown...and the mosquitoes kept you moving ... The teeth were really strange...according to the woman caretaker there the creator had been a hammasteknikko on the practical side of his life...hence access to an endless supply of teeth....:D

A bit of kieliharjoitus:

Naisen hoitajan mukaan siellä käytännöllisen elämänsä aikana tekijä oli ollut hammasteknikko....Correct..???...Anyone??

..Oh yes...and I guess the Russian border is actually about 600 or 700 metres east of the patsaspuisto... GoogleEarth:n mukaan...:D

Wow, I see a nice discussion going on here. I checked out the fortified island near Helsinki CH mentioned and I am definitely going to go there! Looks amazing. I'm not sure if we can get to Savonlinna to see the other castle and other attractions in the eastern part of the country as we will be heading west I guess
we will probably land in Turku sometime in the evening [flights to Turku seem to be much cheaper than to the capital], then we will spend the night there and go to Helsinki already the next morning...we want to spend about 2 days there to see Suomenlinna and visit some museums in the capital itself [maybe the Rahamuseo, the museum of natural history and possibly some others], next we are heading towards Tampere [the band's hometown] and will probably just walk around the city for a while, after that - the Lakeland but I don't know where exactly yet... finally we'll have to go back to Turku for our flight back
I came across the subject of northern lights while planning the trip and it fascinated me, I've read that you can see them in September but we would have to go as far as the Lapland and I don't know if it is possible at all... first of all we would have to take some additional warm clothes and it would take some time to get there, too...I'm not sure if we can squeeze it into our few-days' trip ;-/
I guess we will have to reduce shifting between different locations to minimum because otherwise we will spend more time traveling than sightseeing....
We will rely on public transport only so we have to plan the whole thing quite precisely. BTW can you say something in this matter? what types of transportation are available? busses only or also trains? which one is cheaper and faster? and which one runs more frequently? can you book the tickets in advance?
The Forest Museum seems interesting but I'm not sure if we will be able to include it in the list
I've heard that you can easily communicate in English there, I mean with all the people regardless of the age and location, is this true? That would be just perfect as I don't know a word in Finnish ;) My gf knows some basic expressions but I don't believe that this would suffice for any reasonable communication ;p

Yes, late September / October is a good time, and yes, Lapland or far north is better. HOWEVER, it is a random event, and generally is not predictable as to when it can be seen.

Trains http://www.vr.fi busses http://www.matkahuolto.fi
And about communicating i would say most of under 50 understand atleast some basic english and finding one who really can speak shouldnt be a problem, english is de facto second language in here and teaching it starts at 3rd grade.

Paikkaa hoitaneen naisen mukaan patsaiden tekijä oli siviiliammatiltaan hammasteknikko.

Except he wasn't. He worked at a paper mill. Nevertheless, there is a hammasteknikko connection. I found an article about the artist:
Kuivakkaaseen tyyliin, mutta pilke silmäkulmassa Rönkkönen kertoilee patsaista ja niiden vuorovaikutuksesta yleisön kanssa; onpa patsaan suuhun tungettu marjojakin, mihin taiteilijan piti jo komentaa: niitä ei saa syöttää! Selvisi, että patsasta syöttänyt turisti oli iranilainen hammasteknikko, joka lupautui lähettämään patsaille tekohampaita.
