Children's story books in Finnish?

Post by honkanen » Sun Mar 06, 2011 5:33 am

Does anyone know where I can buy some story books I can read to my newborn baby? I'm only the very basic of Finnish speakers but I wouldn't mind him listening to me attempt to read a story to him in Finnish. :-)

I've heard of authors such as Mauri Kunnas and Jani Nieminen but can't find where to buy some children's books. I live in BC Canada.

Kiitos!

Suomalainen kirjakauppa delivers abroad. Booky.fi appears to do so too, but they require that orders be made via email (toimitusmaksu ulkomaille) if you’re ordering abroad.

Some of the popular children’s authors include...
  • Mauri Kunnas (Koiramäki etc.)
  • Tove Jansson (Muumi / Moomin books – she wrote her material originally in Swedish but Finnish-speaking Finns would usually have read her books as Finnish translations)
  • Elina Karjalainen (Uppo-Nalle)
  • Sinikka and Tiina Nopola (Heinähattu ja Vilttitossu, Risto Räppääjä)
  • Pirkko Koskimies (Pupu Tupuna)
  • Teuvo “Teutori” Koskinen / Satukustannus (Miina ja Manu)
Older classics would include Jalmari Finne (Kiljusen herrasväki), Sakari Topelius (Lukemisia lapsille), Oiva Paloheimo (Tirlittan), Anni Swan (many books), Yrjö Kokko (Pessi ja Illusia), Kirsi Kunnas (Tiitiäisen satupuu and others), Marjatta Kurenniemi (Pukke Punamuurahaisen seikkailut and many others), ... Then there are many fairy tale books with various fantastic/adventurous folk stories and tales, etc.

Not Finnish author, but Elsa Beskow's book were at some point my favorites. And I wouldn't mind leafing through few of her books even now, her artwork is just stunning.

edit.
Elsa Beskow and Pirkko Koskimies brought Kylli-täti to my mind, see: http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kylli_Koski and http://www.yle.fi/elavaarkisto/?s=s&g=6&ag=41

The best option for you would be to take the ISBN number of each book and ask if your local book store could order the books for you. I know this is quite complicated, but it should work if you write down the details of each of the book you want to purchase. As far as I know, there are no Finnish online bookstores that could ship to the US and Canada at the moment.
