Job offer -- how comfortable?

Post by Peoloom » Fri Aug 26, 2011 4:16 pm

Hi, all

I've recently been offered a position in Helsinki. The monthly gross is 4200 Euros. I'm 27, male, single, and plan to rely solely on walking and public transport. The company will also be providing me will a cell phone and paying for that bill, as well as moving costs, deposit on apartment, etc. The offer seems good but I'd like to get some feedback as to how comfortable I'll be on that amount per month (which I'm calculating to come out to about 2800 in my pocket after tax)

Accomodation self contain or studio flat rents monthly - 700 euros
Metro and bus ticket around Helsinki , Monthly - 45 euros
Feeding eating in or out - ?
Night life and socializing - ?
Clothing - ?
Eletricity and television bills - 100 euros monthly

I think It is a good job offer you can comfortably live well here in Helsinki if you will also catch up with the long lonely winter coming soon.

Everything is relative. You don't say where you come from, but it is quite likely that the net income (which you estimate quite right) doesn't buy as much as you would expect, but it is definitely well above averages and by most people standards you could live very nicely.

According to Migri tables your income level is just there at the border between being able to support a wife and three kids or just two. A single cguy an have more hobbies and live on a fancier area.

I'm originally from the US but have lived in Estonia for the past 2 years. I've visited Helsinki multiple times and am well aware of how ridiculously expensive it is. I'm hoping to spend between 7-800 euros per month on a studio / loft apartment in the center, within walking distance to Ruoholahti. Is this realistic?

Def doable, specially if your company is paying the deposit for you - you'll jump ahead of the line.
You may want to look for a short term solution if you're coming soon, though. September and October are the worst for renting and you won't find many decent places on that price range.

You should definatly be able to live a comfortable life on that salary. However, I'm afraid you will have to spend about 900€ on a single bedroom apartment and some 1200 on a two room apartment (kaksio) if you want to live within walking distance of Ruoholahti. Food, restaurants, drinks and services will also be considerably more expensive than you are used to. That is why we Finns always sit around at home until midnight drinking beer before hitting the bars.

Cool, thanks for the info. 900E a month is the standard number I've been getting from people for a 1-bedroom in the center. It sounds pretty reasonable, I suppose. My office is in Ruoholahti but I don't necessarily have to live there. Are there any nearby neighborhoods I should be looking in that are lively?

a 'kaksio' IS a single bedroom apartment (= two 'rooms' = lving room and ONE bedroom)

Translation for 'yksiö' is one room flat or studio

Ok, so I'm looking at 900E for a studio?

What about purchase prices? I'd guess that a kaksio apartment near the center would run about 350,000 euros?

You could look flats at Kamppi, for 900euro you might find 1room flat (and not a studio), around 40m2, generally it costs about 250 000, depending on house condition and year of constraction.

I apologize for intruding on this thread but I was wondering about the 'Migri tables' that have been mentioned here and where can I find them (or am I taking this too literally?). Thanks!
